Abstract
We are experiencing a period of transition that has recently been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental challenges and the delicate economic situation. This change is affecting all sectors of society, and as this period unfolds, the digital revolution is driving social and economic transformations associated with a process of technological development from which museums must not be left out, regardless of their size, type or budget. While it is true that the vast majority of institutions were aware of the much-discussed digital transformation or the introduction of new technologies in exhibition discourse, only those museums with a certain size and resources had been able to integrate these technological advances into their management and museography in an effective, feasible and, above all, sustainable manner over time. Due to new consumer habits, there is an urgent need to add digital support and new communication strategies to connect with all types of audiences. That is why, for some time now, we have seen countless institutions, even those that were wary of digital technology, embrace the concept of the 21st-century museum, which introduces a wide variety of technologies to constantly offer new experiences to its visitors. However, few have stopped to reflect on how much 'true' digital transformation there has been in the management and configuration of the institution itself. The museum, as we had conceived it, no longer exists, and new theoretical and methodological models are needed to delve into the intersection between museums, technology, and society. Based on this situation, this research project conducts a comparative analysis of eleven museums in the city of Murcia and Leeds Museums and Galleries with regard to their digital transformation process, conducting a comprehensive study of both cases through a series of consultations with their professionals and analysing their audience development. Noting the absence of a structured working method to measure the progress of the process of incorporating digital elements into these institutions, a guide is proposed to help them incorporate digital technology in a structured manner based on a known framework that can be adapted to the idiosyncrasies of each institution and that measures the degree of maturity of this transformation. Keywords: museums, city of Murcia, Leeds Museums and Galleries, digital transformation, process management, digital maturity levels.
