We believe that university education must innovate to train young people with a critical mind where information plays an important role. Information literacy of students becomes, thus, an essential element. We studied two groups of students from two universities in two countries on two different continents to determine how to use the new information technologies, lectronic resources and the role to be played the teacher in the educational process. We found differences between students of the University of Murcia in Spain and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, but also similarities.
- PublicationOpen AccessBibliotecas públicas en tiempos de crisis(Editorial UOC - EPI SCP, 2010) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Información y DocumentaciónWe analyze how the present economic crisis is influencing public libraries, and what initiatives must be taken to help users who are unemployed and who face economic difficulties. We also study the increase in library users, the budget reductions, the need to give priority to educational and social activities to help the users who are most in need, and the possibilities of cooperation with public institutions devoted to promoting employment and lifelong learning opportunities. Finally, we explain the case of the regional library in Murcia (Biblioteca Regional de Murcia), which has designed and implemented a program called “Library, job center”
- PublicationOpen AccessConocimiento, uso, valoración de los servicios y expectativas de mejora de los estudiantes universitarios de Murcia respecto a la biblioteca universitaria(1996) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Información y DocumentaciónThis paper presents the main findings of a survey of users of the University Library of Murcia (BUM), focused on students of first and second cycle. The objective was to find out what services students know, what used, how they value, and what expectations and desires are in the library. What is also studied educational function attributed to libraries in their educational process, and what methods apply their teachers to educate them in information literacy.

This check if it has been considered a necessary training, in a context of curriculum reform, and when taught.

Thus, there is a pressing need for empirical analyses to identify the extent to which university students are information-literate. Therefore, an investigation of university students from two institutions in the USA and Europe was carried out in order to determine how they use their libraries, information and computers. It was found that there were similarities and differences between the two groups of students from the University of Murcia, Spain, and the National University of Mexico.
