- PublicationOpen AccessAlfabetización frente a Analfabetismo en Información de Estudiantes Universitarios(2004) Licea de Arenas, Judith; Rodríguez Muñoz, José Vicente; Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Arenas, Miguel; Información y DocumentaciónCollege students have deficiencies in their formation as the limited use of the library and information, and a very memoristic learning. We believe that university education must innovate to train young people with a critical mind where information plays an important role. Information literacy of students becomes, thus, an essential element. We studied two groups of students from two universities in two countries on two different continents to determine how to use the new information technologies, lectronic resources and the role to be played the teacher in the educational process. We found differences between students of the University of Murcia in Spain and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, but also similarities.
- PublicationOpen AccessLa alfabetización informacional como servicio de las bibliotecas(2002) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Información y DocumentaciónThe aim of this article is to justify the need for development and intensification of information literacy services in libraries. This would be the result of expanding the role of libraries as a tool for non-formal education and lifelong learning, which in turn is a consequence of the accelerating change and complexity of knowledge required socially. Information literacy is a transformation of the service user training, public libraries compete both as a school or university, and must be present in traditional spaces and new telematic space of libraries in the digital library.

- PublicationOpen AccessDesigning and implementing web-based tools to assess information competences of social science students at Spanish universities(Springer, 2013) Pinto Molina, María; Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Cuevas Cerveró, Aurora; Puertas, Susana; Gómez Camarero, Carmen; Granell, Ximo; Palomares, Rocío; Guerrero, David; Información y DocumentaciónWe describe the process of designing and applying four web-based tools that assess information competences, focused on Social Science students at Spanish universities. We draw on our previous experience in developing web resources, tests and tutorials for learning information skills (E-coms, Alfamedia, Alfineees, Infolitrans, IL-HUMASS). The toolkit includes: 1) a corpus of texts with a controlled degree of difficulty to be used by students when acquiring the required competences; 2) the IL-HUMASS questionnaire, which measures students' attitudes and perceptions on the importance and self-effectiveness of information competences; 3) a knowledge test, organised in four categories (information search, evaluation, processing, and communication-dissemination); and 4) assessment rubrics, designed to prove students' know-how by fulfilling a set of objective tasks. The combined application of these instruments to a sample of students of Social Science degrees allowed us to confirm the internal validity and reliability of our tools.
- PublicationOpen AccessInformation Literacy developments and issues in Spain(Emerald, 2003) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Pasadas Ureña, Cristóbal; Información y DocumentaciónThe adoption of the information literacy (IL) agenda in Spain has been comparatively slow and fragmented due to cultural setbacks during the twentieth century. Since the late 1980s, however, developments in library services and staffing policies, reforms in education, and wide availability of ICTs, among other factors, have led to a brighter picture, with academic and public librarians all over the country engaged in IL activities for all types of users ± though school libraries still lag far behind. The main problems still to be addressed seem to be much the same as in most comparable countries: IL as a responsibility for all learning facilitators, social awareness of lifelong learning needs, training of IL trainers, assessing the individual achievements and the institutional outcomes of IL training programmes, and a clear understanding of the remit and rationale for different literacies within the information society

- PublicationOpen AccessMás sobre alfabetización informacional(ACIMED, 2009) Licea de Arenas, Judith; Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Valles Valenzuela, Francisco Javier; Información y DocumentaciónThe search for incentives to promote the use of information resources, their identification, evaluation, understanding and usage amongst library users and non users is not new. However, the expression information literacy is relatively new and quite common nowadays because of the Internet and the accessibility to intranets and extranets. In this context librarians have to exert good practices in order to contribute to the elimination of teaching activities based on the chalk and the blackboard. If information literacy means the education of students for a better life, any action should be focused on the development of information competencies including other implicit literacies in order to abandon traditional teaching methods to place the Web at the center of the teaching-learning process.
