Description
Abstract
This is the second paper reporting on the results of a study whose objectives are the tipification and environmental characterization of Southeastern Spain's coastal wetlands (Alicante and Murcia provinces). These ecosystems have suffered strong transformation processes of anthropic origin, which explain their present physiognomy and functioning. Here, past and present incidence of such processes is analyzed, with emphasis on the quantification of losses and transformations experienced by one of the most representative wetland types (salines). Protection figures and valuation schemes applied to those wetlands are also critically reviewed, the validity of the criteria on which they are based being discussed. The aim is to classify wetland conservation situations and to propose general guidelines for their use and management, depending on their integration in local and regional economic activities.
