Description
Abstract
“A shade in my school” is a project that welcomes different participatory artistic initiatives developed under the R+D+I project “El barrio como escenario de pedagogías críticas y arte colaborativo” (The neighborhood as a setting for critical pedagogies and collaborative art). In this paper we present the initiative “From garden to school” that has involved the entire educational community of the school Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente located in the neighborhood of El Carmen in the city of Murcia. The aim of this collaboration has been to use participatory art to claim the necessary shade for the schoolyard to mitigate the extreme Murcian summer temperatures. In the first place, the work process included excursions by primary school students to enhance their knowledge of the center’s ecological environment and their understanding of art as a tool for communication and problemsolving. Secondly, workshops have been developed with members of the school’s parents’ association (AMPA) resulting in the production of a symbolic and collaborative awning made from recycled materials and drawings made by the students.
