Abstract
To understand and contextualise the situation of a food system, it is necessary to know the defining features of its production sector, as well as fresh and processed foods. This is because they are the initial links of the system and the cornerstones of food safety. The aim of this paper is to provide an objective and comprehensive economic characterization of food production in Spain. This includes a description of the primary sector, which encompasses agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, as well as the food and beverage industry and its foreign trade. The paper analyses the evolution of these sectors over the last decade and their relevance in the national and European Union productive context.
