Abstract
Este artículo analiza el billete de 5 pesos de 1922 del Banco de Guatemala, impreso por Waterlow & Sons, como una anomalía iconográfica que sustituye una locomotora por un vapor transatlántico, rompiendo con los diseños del banco. Mediante un análisis semiótico (Lotman, 1990) y codificación iconográfica de 10 billetes guatemaltecos (1874–1945), se explora su simbolismo poscolonial. Basado en teorías de dinero (Helleiner, 2003) y poscolonialidad (Mignolo, 2011), el estudio contrasta el billete con otros diseños guatemaltecos y regionales, resaltando su proyección transnacional. Los resultados contribuyen a la numismática e historia económica, iluminando tensiones entre lo local y lo global.
Abstract: This article examines the 5-peso banknote of 1922 from the Bank of Guatemala, printed by Waterlow & Sons, as an iconographic anomaly that replaces a locomotive with a transatlantic steamship, breaking with the bank’s designs. Through semiotic analysis (Lotman, 1990) and iconographic coding of 10 Guatemalan banknotes (1874–1945), it explores its postcolonial symbolism. Grounded in money theories (Helleiner, 2003) and postcoloniality (Mignolo, 2011), the study contrasts the banknote with other Guatemalan and regional designs, highlighting its transnational projection. The findings contribute to numismatics and economic history, illuminating tensions between the local and the global.
