Description
Abstract
Abstract: What is the function of a proverb in discourse? The purpose of this study is to show that proverbs, by expliciting general principles, are tools for legitimising dialectical or argumentative reasoning. By using a proverb, a speaker is trying to persuade someone to think or act in a specific way. Using proverbial material, even through perverbs, could prove particularly effective for a genre close to the proverb: the activist slogan. Depending on the extension of the referential context and the qualities of the perverb, it may exceptionally lead to a proverbialization.
