- PublicationOpen AccessAdvantages of exercise in rehabilitation, treatment and prevention of altered morphological features in knee osteoarthritis. A narrative review(F. Hernández y Juan F. Madrid. Universidad de Murcia: Departamento de Biología Celular e Histología, 2014) Musumeci, Giuseppe; Loreto, Carla; Imbesi, Rosa; Trovato, Francesca Maria; Di Giunta, Angelo; Lombardo, Claudia; Castorina, Sergio; Castrogiovann, PaolaKnee osteoarthritis (OA) represents one of the most common causes of disability in the world. It leads to social, psychological and economic costs with financial consequences, also because a further increase is expected. Different knee OA treatments are usually considered in relation to the stage of the disease, such as surgical management and pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments. Treatment should begin with the safest and least invasive one, before proceeding to more invasive, expensive ones. Non-pharmacologic, behavioral treatments of knee OA are recommended not only in rehabilitation but also in prevention because many risk factors, such as excess weight, obesity and joint tissue inflammation, can be monitored and thus prevented. In the present review, we analyze data from the most recent literature in relation to the effects of physical exercise on prevention, therapy and rehabilitation in knee OA. All data suggest that physical exercise is an effective, economical and accessible tool to everyone, in the treatment and prevention of knee OA. The literature search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar using appropriate keywords in relation to knee osteoarthritis.
- PublicationOpen AccessAnálisis crítico de las nuevas reducciones introducidas por la Ley 12/2023 aplicables sobre los rendimientos netos derivados del arrendamiento de viviendas en el IRPF(Centro de Estudios Financieros, 2025-03-14) Marcos Cardona, Marta; Derecho Financiero y Tributario; Facultad de DerechoAmong the set of measures that public authorities may adopt to facilitate access to rental housing, fiscal policy plays a fundamental role. Focusing on the realm of personal taxation, Law 12/2023, of 24 May, introduced changes to the taxation of rental income, modifying the reduction percentages applicable to net positive income in the Personal Income Tax (IRPF). Prior to its enactment, the general reduction stood at 60 %, but the new legislation establishes a basic percentage of 50 %, with the possibility of increasing it up to 90 %. The application of these different percentages is subject to compliance with certain specific requirements, whose adequacy and effectiveness will be subject to critical analysis.
- PublicationOpen AccessBreast cancer patients' beliefs, behaviors, and knowledge about the value of physical therapy in their rehabilitation(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Kabashi, Doruntina; Hoti, Flaka; Kabashi, Laorent; Terziqi, Hasime; Hoxha, Faton; Goqaj, Lirigzon; Ukëhaxhaj, Antigona; Sin departamento asociadoThis study aimed to examine breast cancer patients' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding physical therapy and its impact on rehabilitation after surgery and radiotherapy. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 67 women who had undergone surgery or radiotherapy for breast cancer. Participants completed a valid and reliable self-prepared questionnaire comprising of 32 questions. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 25. Results showed that 46.2% of patients were unaware of the role of physical therapy in breast cancer rehabilitation. Patients with higher education and those over 60 years old, demonstrated significantly greater knowledge about physical therapy (p < 0.05). Access to physical therapy services was limited, with only 14.9% receiving it post-diagnosis and 20.9% post-surgery. For those who received physical therapy sessions after surgery, positive correlations were found between physical therapy and improvements in mobility (r = 0.355, p ≤ 0.05) as well as pain and muscle tension relief (r = 0.602, p ≤ 0.05), and result for the variable pain (r = .202*, p ≤ 0.05). These findings underscore the need for increased awareness about physical therapy, improved access to services, and better communication from healthcare providers to optimize rehabilitation outcomes for breast cancer patients in Kosovo.

- PublicationOpen AccessEffect of different types of exercise on fitness in people with multiple sclerosis: a network meta-analysis(Wiley, 2023-05-24) Reina Gutiérrez, Sara; Meseguer Henarejos, Ana Belén; Torres Costoso, Ana; Álvarez Bueno, Celia; Cavero Redondo, Iván; Núñez de Arenas Arroyo, Sergio; Guzmán Pavón, María José; Sánchez López, Mairena; Martínez Vizcaíno, Vicente; FisioterapiaBackground: It is assumed that people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who participate in programs of physical exercise improve their physical fitness. Objective: The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to analyze the effect of different types of exercise on muscular fitness and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) among people with MS and to determine the best type of exercise according to disease severity. Methods: MEDLINE, the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, the Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to April 2022 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concerning the effect of physical exercise on fitness in people with MS. We ranked the types of physical exercise by calculating the surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA). Results: We included 72 RCTs involving 2543 MS patients in this NMA. A ranking of five types of physical exercise (aerobic, resistance, combined [aerobic and resistance], sensorimotor training, and mind–body exercises) was achieved. Combined and resistance training had the highest effect sizes (0.94, 95% CI 0.47, 1.41, and 0.93, 95% CI 0.57, 1.29, respectively) and the highest SUCRA (86.2% and 87.0%, respectively) for muscular fitness. The highest effect size (0.66, 95% CI 0.34, 0.99) and SUCRA (86.9%) for CRF was for aerobic exercise. Conclusions: Combined and resistance training seem to be the most effective exercises to improve muscular fitness and aerobic exercise for CRF in people with MS.
- PublicationOpen AccessEfficacy of massage and stretching for controlling hamstring muscle spasticity in children with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy: A comparative study(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Almalty, Abdulmajeed R.; Mashaal, Ahmed Hussein; Hawamdeh, Mohannad; Bleedy, Nermeen; Abdelnour, Hassan M; Mahmood, Safi; Sin departamento asociadoBackground: Massage therapy is utilized to alleviate muscle spasticity in children with cerebral palsy, typically lasting at least 15 min per muscle group, which may result in lower family compliance with the home program. Objective: This study aimed to explore the impact of stretching alone or in combination with short-term massage on reducing hamstring muscle spasticity and enhancing knee range of motion (ROM) in children with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. Methods: Twelve children diagnosed with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy (6–12 years old) were randomly divided into two groups: the first received massage and stretching exercises, and the second received stretching exercises only on the hamstring muscle. The Modified Ashworth Scale was used to measure the stiffness of the hamstring muscle, and the ROM of knee flexion was measured using a manual goniometer. ROM and modified Ashworth scale (MAS) were measured at baseline and after 1 and 2 weeks of treatment, respectively. Both legs of each participant received treatment for 2 weeks, with the duration of massage being 5 min and the duration of stretching being 30s with three repetitions. Results: Both methods reduced hamstring spasticity after two weeks; however, ROM improved after the first week and more significantly after the 2nd week. Conclusion: Stretching exercises, whether performed alone or in combination with short-term massage, have been found to be equally effective for treating spastic muscles. Although there was an improvement in spasticity after the first week of short-term massage, the difference was not statistically significant.
- PublicationOpen AccessEfficacy of robotic training gloves in improving hand function and movement in stroke patients(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Abd Elhady, Abd Elhady Samy; Ahmed, Gehan Mousa; Hassan, Amr; Ibrahim, Saied Mohamed; Abdelmageed, Shaima Mohamed; Sin departamento asociadoRobotic training gloves are designed to assist with hand movements by providing resistance, support, or guidance. The efficacy of robotic training gloves on hand function in stroke patients, particularly when using the mirror mode, is an intriguing topic in rehabilitation therapy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of assistive robotic rehabilitation devices on hand function in stroke patients. A controlled randomized study was conducted with thirty (9 males and 21 female) stroke patients, who were selected from the outpatient clinic of Al-Delingat Central Hospital - Al-Buhaira Governorate. These patients were randomly assigned to two groups: the study group (A), which received the selected physical therapy program and mirror therapy assisted by a robotic rehabilitation glove, and the control group (B), which received only the conventional physical therapy program. When comparing between both groups, the results indicate that the patients in group A that underwent the combined therapy had a statistically significant improvement in grip strength when tested by the Jamar dynamometer (MD= 1.87 [0.39, 3.35], P=0.015) and in motor function when evaluated by the Fugl-Meyer scale than the group who had only conventional physical therapy (Group B) (MD= 16.67 [3.9, 29.4], p=0.012). This controlled randomized study provides evidence that combining robotic rehabilitation with a standard physical therapy program yields superior improvements in grip strength and motor function compared to standard physical therapy alone.

---------------
- PublicationOpen AccessPsychological aspects associated with ACL rehabilitation and recurrence in football players: a systematic review(Federación Española de Docentes de Educación Física, 2024-06-01) Ramos Pastrana, Luis Miguel; Giménez Egido, José María; Olmedilla Zafra, Aurelio; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosAlthough most football players recover good physical function after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery, some do not return to their sport or to the same pre-injury level, and there is a risk of recurrence. Therefore, this study aimed to examine research on psychological aspects of ACL rehabilitation and Return to Play (RTP), as well as their influence on possible recurrence in football and futsal players. The search was conducted using the Scopus, PubMed, WoS, CENTRAL databases, and grey literature sources DART-Europe and OpenGrey. A total of nine studies met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated as the most evaluated psycho-logical factor the psychological readiness to RTP through the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Return to Sport After Injury (ACL-RSI). Likewise, psychological interventions in ACL-injured football players have positive effects on mood states, reduces pain perception, and fear reinjury, among others. Risk profiles for recurrence included vulnerability to stress and high psychological readiness to RTP. Therefore, psychological interventions should be incorporated into the rehabilitation process and screening to identify players at risk for poor outcomes or recurrences. Additional research would help to understand the influence of other variables or optimal levels of psychological readiness to RTP.

- PublicationOpen AccessResearch on the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance Approach: a bibliometric review(American Occupational Therapy Association, 2024-10-25) Valera Gran, Desirée; Delgado Lobete, Laura; Montes Montes, Rebeca; Navarrete Muñoz, Eva María; Atención Sociosanitaria; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Ciencias Sociosanitarias (Lorca)Importance: The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is an evidence-based intervention approach that has significantly increased in popularity over the past two decades. However, how the research literature on this topic is patterned is still unknown, so it is difficult to identify potential areas for research and clinical interest. Aims: To analyze the literature published on the CO-OP approach to provide a detailed and structured analysis of the publication patterns. Data Sources: All literature related to CO-OP included in the Web of Science database through June 15, 2024. Study Selection and Data Collection: All published studies related to CO-OP were included in the bibliometric analysis, which was conducted on the raw data retrieved from the Web of Science database using the Bibliometrix R package. Findings: The annual growth rate in CO-OP research has been 0.8%, significantly increasing from 2015 onward. Most of the research has been published in occupational therapy and rehabilitation journals by English-speaking research teams, and its scope has expanded from developmental coordination disorder to a wide range of health conditions. In addition, two main lines of research have emerged: one focusing on understanding the underlying cognitive processes involved in CO-OP and the other focusing on its clinical effectiveness. Conclusions and Relevance: Research on CO-OP has significantly increased over the past decade, and it currently encompasses a wide range of areas. This analysis may facilitate the advancement of research on and the clinical practical application of CO-OP. Plain-Language Summary: The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) is an evidence-based intervention approach that has significantly increased in popularity over the past two decades. Occupational therapists use it to improve the occupational performance of both children and adults with movement difficulties. However, it is unknown how the research literature on this topic is patterned, so it is difficult to identify potential areas for research and clinical interest. This study found that scientific literature on CO-OP has significantly increased in the past decade and that its scope has expanded from developmental coordination disorder to a wider range of health conditions, such as cerebral palsy. Moreover, research is now focused on two main questions: What are the underlying cognitive processes involved during intervention, and how effective is the CO-OP approach? These findings can be used to further improve occupational performance and participation among occupational therapy clients who struggle with motor performance and planning.
- PublicationOpen AccessUse of Virtual Reality and Videogames in the Physiotherapy Treatment of Stroke Patients: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial(2023-03-08) Peláez-Vélez, F.-J.; Eckert, M.; Gacto-Sánchez, M.; Martínez-Carrasco, Á.; FisioterapiaA stroke is a neurological condition with a high impact in terms of physical disability in the adult population, requiring specific and effective rehabilitative approaches. Virtual reality (VR), a technological approach in constant evolution, has great applicability in many fields of rehabilitation, including strokes. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of a traditional neurological physiotherapy-based approach combined with the implementation of a specific VR-based program in the treatment of patients following rehabilitation after a stroke. Participants (n = 24) diagnosed with a stroke in the last six months were randomly allocated into a control group (n = 12) and an experimental group (n = 12). Both groups received one-hour sessions of neurological physiotherapy over 6 weeks, whilst the experimental group was, in addition, supplemented with VR. Patients were assessed through the Daniels and Worthingham Scale, Modified Ashworth Scale, Motor Index, Trunk Control Test, Tinetti Balance Scale, Berg Balance Scale and the Functional Ambulation Classification of the Hospital of Sagunto. Statistically significant improvements were obtained in the experimental group with respect to the control group on the Motricity Index (p = 0.005), Trunk Control Test (p = 0.008), Tinetti Balance Scale (p = 0.004), Berg Balance Scale (p = 0.007) and the Functional Ambulation Classification of the Hospital of Sagunto (p = 0.038). The use of VR in addition to the traditional physiotherapy approach is a useful strategy in the treatment of strokes.
