- PublicationOpen AccessVecindad, religiosiad y conflictos jurisdiccionales en el Jujuy colonial(2016-10-18) Estruch, DoloresThis work reconstructs the process of formation of the community of the colonial Jujuy, delving into the role played by religion. To this end, we explore the trajectory of the Tarija Pablo Bernardez de Ovando, a major landowner that accumulated titles, mercedes of lands and a "encomienda" that would end up constituting the marquissate of Tojo. We are interested in going over his particular trayectory since his condition as a foreigner will allow us to investigate which formalized and non-formalized practices assisted him in acquiring his status of citizen and will also give us an approach into jurisdictional cultures typical of pre-contemporary societies. We consider religion to have played a key role in that process since his formation of a vicinity was, among other aspects, settled in a judicial process between the Archbishopric of Charcas and the Bishopric of Tucumán over payment of tithes, in which Ovando was excommunicated by the Archbishopric.

- PublicationOpen AccessThe Sandinista Revolution in the Netherlands: the Dutch solidarity committees and Nicaragua (1977-1990).(2016-10-18) van Ommen, ElineThis article analyses the formation, popularity, and the struggles of the Dutch solidarity movement for Nicaragua in the late 1970s and 1980s. It brings together domestic and transnational approaches to the history of Third World solidarity activism. In doing so, this article argues that a longer history of Dutch leftist activism and fascination with Latin American culture, in combination with the diplomatic efforts of the FSLN to create an international support base, were the main driving forces behind the Nicaragua solidarity movement in the Netherlands. In particular, this article identifies the 1979 Sandinista Revolution and the 1981 election of Ronald Reagan as crucial turning points for the Dutch solidarity movement, as the solidarity committees needed to adapt to the changing military and political situation in the Western hemisphere.
- PublicationOpen AccessSolidaridad con la Revolución Sandinista. Comparativa de redes transnacionales: los casos de la República Federal de Alemania y España(2016-10-18) Agreda Portero, José Manuel; Helm, ChristianThe article offers a comparison of solidarity movements with the Sandinista Revolution in Spain and the Federal Republic of Germany. A central argument is the influence of national contexts and factors on the development of solidarity and its shape in both countries. In terms of actors, the motivation of national activists, the organization of foreign solidarity in Nicaragua itself and the case of solidarity brigades, both movements share many similarities. Main differences exist in the organization on a national level and in their relationship with the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and their organizations. While solidarity activists in Spain were more open to Sandinista efforts to organize solidarity hierarchically, West German solidarity severely opposed them and took a more critical step towards the Sandinista Revolution.
- PublicationOpen AccessLa prensa obrera como vehículo divulgador del ideal libertario: el caso de la Cuba decimonónica.(2016-10-18) Colodrón Valbuena, JavierThe anarchist labor movement arisen in Cuba during the last decades of the XIX century needed a platform to spread its programme. Thus, the libertarian press emerged. The different journals that contributed to diffuse the libertarian ideal among Cubans and immigrants experienced an evolution especially due to the restrictive policy of the colonial government. The aim of this paper is to analyze the libertarian discourse through its journalistic production and to understand its transformation as a result of the current legislation of that period.
- PublicationOpen AccessLas imágenes de las guerrillas centroamericanas en las redes de la solidaridad internacional de Suecia.(2016-10-18) Camacho Padilla, Fernando; Ramírez Palacio, LauraSince the mid-sixties, Latin American revolutionary experiences generated great enthusiasm among the Swedish progressive youth. With the aim of exposing the political process and the difficult reality of the marginalized sectors, many citizens of the Nordic country traveled to the region to record and transmit the events. Several photographers were among them, both professional and amateur, who meticulously registered everything they experienced during their journeys. Much of their material was utilized, published and disseminated by the Swedish solidarity committees through various channels, such as posters, newsletters and exhibitions, among others. Furthermore, the revolutionary movements provided their own photographs to Scandinavia, which showed scenes of daily life and the difficult social conditions of their respective country. On one hand, this article examines the arrival and the uses of photographs of Central American revolutionary experiences, mainly from Nicaragua and El Salvador, in Sweden. On the other hand, it is an interpretation of the desired social effect sought by the authors and both political and solidarity organizations that were responsible for their dissemination.

- PublicationOpen AccessDiscursos en (r)evolución. Lucha ideológica y captación de solidaridad en el movimiento revolucionario salvadoreño(2016-10-18) Cortina Orero, EudaldDuring the late sixties a New Left was conformed in El Salvador. It developed sparsely in the next decade. The revolutionary organizations held in this period a fierce ideological debate that was part of a struggle for hegemony within the revolutionary movement. In the early eighties, once unified in the FMLN, insurgent organizations increased their international activities with the aim of forming a broad movement of solidarity with the struggle of the Salvadoran people. They had to accommodate their speech to influence new actors, seeking to settle their proposals and demands on beliefs and social representations shared by these groups. The aim of this paper is to analyze the discursive strategy used by insurgents in the international arena. Through the analysis of the publications of the FMLN we will see the lines on which the insurgent discourse for international audiences is built. We will focus on the revaluation of concepts as "democracy" and "peace" in the rebel discourse and the gradual disappearance of Marxist political labels to characterize the Salvadoran regime, which would now be defined by its repressive profile, dependance of the United States and the absence of political representation; its undemocratic character.
- PublicationOpen AccessVietnam in Latin America! The Nicaraguan Revolution in the Austrian Press(2016-10-18) Blecha, LaurinThis paper analyses selected topics of the Nicaraguan Revolution in the Austrian press, namely the occupation of the National Palace in Managua in 1978, the triumph of the revolution on July 19, 1979 and the visits by two members of the conservative Austrian People's Party in Nicaragua in 1984. For this purpose, the paper uses articles and reports of the following Austrian newspapers: the Arbeiter-Zeitung, Die Presse, Kleine Zeitung, Kurier, Neue Kronen Zeitung, Salzburger Nachrichten and the Wiener Zeitung. Given that, the objective of the paper is to show discursive strategies in the Austrian newspapers concerning the Nicaraguan Revolution. The results of this research demonstrates that in general all newspapers lacked of sophisticated own research about Nicaragua and the region. Their dependency on the global news agencies led to false reports, misinterpretations and drew an unbalanced picture of the events and policies concerning Nicaragua and Central America.
