A longitudinal examination of the influence of winning or losing with motivational climate as a mediator on enjoyment, perceived competence, and intention to be physically active in youth basketball
    (Taylor & Francis, 2021-11-30) Morales-Belando, María T.; Côté, Jean; Arias-Estero, José L.; Expresión Plástica, Musical y Dinámica
Background: In basketball, children’s main reason for playing is to havefun, whereas outcomes such as skill acquisition and long-termdevelopment are often perceived by adults as the main motive for children’s engagement in sport. However, no studies have yet examined whether the game outcome could influence motivational variables longitudinally over the course of a season. The novelty of the present study resides in the longitudinal exploration, the multilevel approach, and the analysis of motivational climate as a mediator variable between game outcome and enjoyment, perceived competence, and intention to be physically active. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze whether under-12 basketball players’ who won versus lost games had different perceptions of their enjoyment, perceived competence, and intention to be physically active throughout a season, considering motivational climate as a mediator. Method: The participants were 94 boys and two girls from eight basketball clubs (Mage = 9.72 years, SD = 1.70 years, age range = 9–11 years). The study followed a six months longitudinal design. The independent variable was the game outcome (win-loss). The dependent variables were enjoyment, perceived competence, and intention to be physically active. Motivational climate was a mediator variable. Data were collected at the end of each of the 56 games throughout 14 game days over a basketball formal season. Longitudinal multilevel regression analysis was conducted within player-level and between player-level with the repeated measures representing the game-to-game variability. Results: We found that at the within player level, motivational climate mediated the effect of game outcome as follows. On game days, when the game is won, players perceive the climate as more ego-related, which in turn reduced enjoyment and increased perceived competence. On game days, when the game is lost, players perceive the climate as more task-related, which in turn increased enjoyment, perceived competence, and intention to be physically active. Conclusion: Game outcomes did not directly affect players’ feelings, but motivational climate mediated the effect between game outcomes and motivational elements within players throughout a season. This study shows that the competitive nature of sport is not a deterrent to youth positive experiences provided adults minimize the emphasis of game outcomes over personal factors such as competence and enjoyment, through motivational climate.

A systematic review of teaching games for understanding intervention studies from a practice-referenced perspective
(Taylor & Francis Group, ) Morales-Belando, Kirk, David María T.; Arias-Estero, José L.; Expresión Plástica, Musical y Dinámica
According to the theory of practice architecture, every practice enacted in classrooms is a result of interaction between social, physical and spatial elements. In relation, from a practice-referenced perspective, it is necessary to know which teaching-learning implementation features could help teachers/ coaches/researchers to assemble Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) interventions in relation to the institutional environment. Purpose: This review aimed to explore from a practice-referenced perspective how TGfU researchers reported their interventions based on the teaching-learning implementation features (intervention design as a function of the context, intervention length, lesson content, basic lesson elements, lesson alignment, teacher/coach experience with the approach, and lesson validation and treatment verification) and their association with learners’ outcomes. Results: We found 20 studies that included some of the teaching-learning implementation features, but none of the studies included all of these features. We also found that studies of TGfU measured and reported learners’ outcomes in a variety of ways. This creates difficulties for drawing conclusions about the relationships between the presence of teaching-learning implementation features and student learning outcomes. Conclusion: Further TGfU interventions should be planned to consider the following: (a) that lessons need to be designed as a function of the context; (b) the number of intervention lessons, their duration and the duration of each lesson task; (c) the concrete tactical and technique contents and goals per lesson; (d) the modified games, questions and achievable challenges as basic lesson elements; (e) the alignment between the basic lesson elements and the structure of lessons, based on the goals of each lesson; (f) that teachers/ coaches need to have previous experience in TGfU and be trained on the specific study purpose; (g) that lessons should be validated before implementation and verified during intervention; (h) researchers should regulate the ways in which learners’ outcomes are measured and reported within TGfU studies.

A Teaching Games for Understanding Programme to Deal with Reasons for Dropout in Under11 Football
    (Taylor & Francis Group, 2020-07-07) Barquero-Ruiz, Carmen; Arias-Estero, José L.; Morales-Belando, María T.; Expresión Plástica, Musical y Dinámica
Young players report that they dropout of organized football due to excessive emphasis on technical execution, low success, and the lack of autonomy and motivation experienced by players during training sessions. Purpose: To determine whether a TGfU intervention during a youth football program led players to improve in variables related to dropout. That means tactical-technical competence (decision-making, skill execution), success (successful game performance), autonomy (number of decisions made, player autonomy, number of game involvements, player participation), and motivation (enjoyment, intention to be physically active). Method: Twenty under-11-players and two coaches were recruited from 17 clubs. A pretestposttest design with a multi-method approach was used. Coaches were trained and mentored in TGfU. Data were collected using Game Performance Assessment Instrument, enjoyment and intention to be physically active scales, and two focus groups with the players and the coaches. Results: Players improved in decision-making, skill execution, successful game performance, number of decisions made, number of game involvements, and intention to be physically active (p < .05). Participants attributed the results to the TGfU pedagogical features emphasized during the coaches’ training and mentoring. Conclusion: Considering the reasons for dropout in football, in terms of excessive emphasis on technical execution, low success, and the lack of autonomy and motivation experienced by players, TGfU could be a useful pedagogical approach for teaching-learning organized youth football. The TGfU pedagogical features emphasized during coaches’ training and mentoring could be crucial to obtain these results due to the fact that they were the sub-themes highlighted during the focus groups.

Adherence to mediterranean diet related with physical fitness and physical activity in schoolchildren aged 6–13
(MDPI, 2020-02-22) López-Gil, José Francisco; Brazo-Sayavera, Javier; García-Hermoso, Antonio; Yuste Lucas, Juan Luis; Actividad Física y Deporte; Expresión Plástica, Musical y Dinámica
The relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and both physical fitness (PF) and physical activity (PA) level has been analysed in several studies. The aim of this research was to describe, compare and analyse the level of PF and PA in schoolchildren aged 6–13 in the Region of Murcia, according to adherence to the MD. A descriptive and cross-sectional study was performed. A total of 370 schoolchildren (44.9% girls) aged 6–13 (8.7 ± 1.8) from six primary schools in the Region of Murcia (Spain). Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for children and teenagers (KIDMED) was used to determinate the adherence to the MD. The ALPHA-FIT Test Battery was applied for assess body composition and PF. PA level was determined using Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C). Only 25.9% of the schoolchildren had optimal adherence to the MD. Regarding the scores of the different PF tests in MD groups, only statistically significant differences were found for cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) (p = 0.048) in boys. PA level showed statistically significant differences in both boys (p = 0.040) and girls (p = 0.016). A positive relationship was found between the KIDMED and PA level (p = 0.235). A higher probability of having a greater CRF (OR = 1.17; CI = 1.02–1.34) and PA level (OR = 7.84; CI = 2.84–21.60) was found in high MD group. These results suggest that an optimal adherence to the MD is associated with higher CRF and PA level in the selected schoolchildren.

This article uses factor analysis to interpret the data resulting from a questionnaire created to find out the perception and opinion of creativity held by university students of the Degree in Primary Education. It explores the creative training they have, as well as the training received in formative stages prior to university, from the perspective of gender, academic year and Baccalaureate of origin. The sample consisted of 712 students belonging to five different academic years and surveyed at the beginning of the first artistic subject taken. The methodology was based on the collection of data by means of a Likert questionnaire and its subsequent processing by means of Principal Component Analysis, offering significant results between gender and the personal perception of creativity, as well as significant differences in terms of the Baccalaureate of origin and the creative training received in their previous education. The data obtained show the need to deepen and insist on creative training in stages prior to university, stressing the need for students to be aware of the processes to promote their creativity in which they are immersed.

Analyzing the keys to the design of a mobile application for physical activity for school and out-of-school use from the perspective of adolescents, teachers, coaches, managers, and experts
(Public Library of Science, 2025-05-07) Mateo Orcajada, Adrián; Abenza Cano, Lucía; López Miñarro, Pedro Ángel; Meroño, Lourdes; Gallardo Guerrero, Ana María; Morales Belando, María de la Trinidad; González Gálvez, Noelia; Espeso García, Alejandro; Abelleira Lamela, Tomás; Gómez Cuesta, Nereaf; García Vélez, Antonio Joaquín; Albaladejo Saura, Mario; Albaladejo Saura, Mario; Esparza Ros, Francisco; Vaquero Cristóbal, Raquel; Expresión Plástica, Musical y Dinámica
No previous research has analyzed the opinion of adolescents, teachers, coaches, managers, and mobile app experts, on the usefulness and functionality of mobile apps for use by adolescents. For this reason, the objectives of this research were: to discover their opinion about the physical activity apps currently available; and to determine the elements and characteristics that they consider most relevant to find in a physical activity app that can be used for a longer period of time. Eight focus groups were carried out in which a total of 38 adolescents (mean age: 13.74 ± 1.24 years old), 29 teachers, coaches, and managers (mean age: 35.27 ± 2.81 years old), and 10 experts (mean age: 43.18 ± 4.22 years old) participated. The most relevant results regarding the apps available include limitations in their functionality and design, as well as in the information provided and the requirements, which means that they are not designed exclusively for adolescents. Regarding the demands for a specific app for adolescents, the participants highlighted gamification as the main element, as it is key to user engagement, as well as the possibility of recording physical activity along with other healthy habits. Challenges, competitions or the possibility of observing progress should also be present in the application as they also influence user engagement and motivation. Adolescents also highlighted a multimedia section, privacy and rewards, while for professionals the inclusion of feedback, the facilitation of work and a fast interface for use in the school environment were key.

Some educational scenarios show a marginal reality that is not always perceived. Photography constitutes an ad hoc method to capture both the investigative process and the experiences and points of view of the students, allowing to know the reality of students in vulnerable situations, the promotion of interculturality and the detection of conditions or circumstances that influence the perpetuation of social exclusion, in order to improve the starting situation. To intervene in this situation, a qualitative research was carried out with a total of 118 students from the third cycle of the Primary Education stage. A series of exercises based on photography were carried out as the main tool for creation and expression. The project was focused from visual research based on the Arts, using photographs as a means of exhibition and transmission of information, being able to capture the main data of the process and the results through images. This proposal served as a pretext to trigger new actions and socio-educational implications that not only directly influenced the students, but also went beyond the school walls.
