Description
Abstract
Objectives. Based on the theology of pastoral care, supported by Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church, as well as psychological theories of leadership, we sought to construct a competency model of episcopal leadership, using the profile of Bishop Damián Iguacen Borau during his time as prelate of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna as an example. Methodology. A bibliometric study and content analysis of episcopal documents was carried out, as well as a case study analysing the psychological and intellectual traits of Bishop Iguacen, using a quantitative and qualitative empirical study to assess his performance as evaluated by priests, religious and lay people. Results. The research questions were answered by providing, on the one hand, a highly positive assessment of Bishop Iguacen's pastoral care and the impact it had on the diocese, highlighting his leadership, his identity as a bishop, his communication skills, his pastoral plan, his ability to manage using appropriate methodology, his decision-making, his interaction with others and his continuous evaluation for improvement. Conclusions. Through predictive linear regression analyses, it was possible to outline a model of episcopal leadership based on key factors such as the assessment of pastoral care by clergy, religious and lay people. Finally, the following competency factors were found to have significant statistical weight: methodological and pastoral management competence; social relationship competence; planning and communication competence; and competence related to identity as a bishop.
