Description
Abstract
In this article, the social criticism of the end of the 19th century in Spain is analyzed, which is practiced through a work of the Género Chico (literary ‘little genre’): Ortografía. It is a revista musical by Carlos Arniches, Gonzalo Cantó and the composer Ruperto Chapí, released in Madrid in 1888. Music, text and staging constitute the frame of attention where the rhetorical, dramatic and musical resources compose a social satire from the symbolism allocated to the letters of the alphabet and to the punctuation marks. From the study of the libretto and the score, we will show how the anthropological look and the social criticism are true protagonists of the work, where politicians and society are criticized or the satire is used against women and the invasion of foreign customs
