Description
Abstract
Peer group relationships are a powerful predictor of adolescent involvement in drug use and antisocial behaviour. This study aims to analyse drug use based on whether or not adolescents belong to a violent or nonviolent gang, as well as on bullying roles. The participants were 1,264 students in Compulsory Secondary Education. Membership of violent gangs was found to be associated with significantly higher drug use compared to non-membership to gangs, and to membership of non-violent gangs. All those who engaged in bullying belonged to a gang. It is essential to emphasise the importance of preventing drug use and other risk behaviours in adolescence.
