Abstract
Résumé: Paul Morand considère l’histoire comme un élément fondamental pour comprendre et expliquer une nation. Dans Le fl agellant de Séville, il se sert des couleurs de Goya pour peindre l’âme espagnole, à travers le récit d’un drame personnel, inséré dans les tragiques événements vécus en Espagne entre 1808 et 1815, une période dans laquelle les destinées de l’Espagne et la France se croisent encore une fois. Dans son roman, Morand offre une vision lucide des Espagnols et de leur histoire, qui invite aussi à la réfl exion sur l’histoire récente de l’Europe.
Abstract: Paul Morand considers history an important clue to understand a nation’s character. In Le flagellant de Séville, he uses Goya’s colours to paint Spanish soul by narrating an individual tragedy inscribed in the collective dramatic events of Spanish history between 1808 and 1815, when the destinies of Spain and France converged once again. In his novel, Morand offers a lucid vision of Spanish people and history, which should lead to a more general thinking about recent European history
