Description
Abstract
This article is an introduction to the work of Leila Baalbaki, a Lebanese writer who is considered as one the most influential female authors in contemporary Arab cultural landscape. Baalbaki’s publications during the 1950's and the early 1960’s display her as a strong advocate of women’s rights and freedoms. As an activist, controversial and nonconformist artist, she committed her life to creating characters who were meant to be reflections of the society she belonged to, a society which failed to accept and respect her. This review of extracts from Baalbaki’s books – I Live, TheDeformed Gods, A Spaceship of Tenderness to the Moon and We are without masks - is an invitation to discover one of the female voices in rebel Arab literature.
