Description
Abstract
In Phd. 84a 2-6 Plato compares the scene of Penelope undoing Laertes’ shroud in Od. 2.104-105 and 19.149-150 with the soul that leaves philosophy. This comparison is mentioned neither in Eustathius nor in Homeric scholia, which, in turn, identify Penelope with philosophy. This same position is shared by Damascius in his commentary on the Phaedo, diverging from the platonic perspective. This article discusses the reasons why the Homeric exegesis seems to ignore the platonic reading and the possible origins of the interpretation of Penelope as philosophy.
