Abstract
En septiembre de 2016 se han cumplido cien años de la muerte de José Echegaray. Por este motivo, parece adecuado realizar un balance y analizar su trayectoria en la vida pública española durante casi sesenta años.
Echegaray fue un destacado político, científico, economista y dramaturgo a finales del siglo XIX. Para analizar sus diferentes actividades y señalar las relaciones existentes entre ellas, es preciso llevar a cabo un trabajo interdisciplinar.
En este artículo se subraya la conexión entre el pensamiento de Echegaray, caracterizado por su optimismo e individualismo, y su formación científica. Asimismo, se indican los vínculos entre Echegaray y los intelectuales que surgen a mediados del XIX y que destacan por su competencia profesional como abogados, ingenieros, profesores o economistas.
José Echegaray was a notable politician, scientist, economist and playwright in the late nineteenth century. For this reason, his work requires an interdisciplinary approach to analyze the different roles carried out by Echegaray and the relationships between them. In order to facilitate understanding of the optimism and individualism of Echegaray, this paper highlights the importance of his scientific background and its connection with professional groups such as lawyers, economists, teachers and engineers that arose in the mid-nineteenth century.
