Description
Abstract
Abstract: In this article, we examine the narrative constructed by Spanish press article headlines about the French social movement known as “yellow vests”. They are characterized by their brevity and the fact that they convey only a fraction of the full story. To investigate this, we conducted a qualitative analysis of Spanish press headlines in six generalist newspapers about this movement from November 2018 to December 2020. In this study, we focused on verbs and their arguments since they convey the meaning of states and actions (Rojas-García, 2022). We analyzed the linguistic units based on the principles of storytelling, which is often used to guide journalistic narratives, as noted by some authors (Marti & Pélissier, 2012; Pélissier & Eyrès, 2014; Salmon, 2007). We semantically tagged our corpus using ATLAS.ti, a textual analysis software. Our findings indicate that the headlines analyzed provide only one single perspective of this social movement, and that certain information seems to have been omitted, maybe intentionally.
