Description
Abstract
a muestra

This research aims to study the representation of women from other cultures, in a sample of the magazines published by Intermón Oxfam for a year , i.e. , this study intends to approach the way in which the said women are represented in what is called the discourse of development in order to observe possible stereotypes . As regards methodology, all the news items on women from other cultures that were published in the magazine IO from Intermón Oxfam were collected for a year. The main hypothesis of this research is that women are visible in the publications under study and usually represented as victims and vulnerable. In order to confirm or deny this hypothesis we will analyze the visual characteristics of women’s representation in a sample of the news items compiled since they can be considered the most representative of our corpus. The results show that there are different ways of representing the women under analysis: negative, i.e., presenting them as poor and dependent, and positive when it is pointed out their capacity to work. The theoretical framework s used will be critical discourse analy sis , specifically in the model proposed by van Leeuwen (2008) and Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) visual grammar
