Description
Abstract
This article reconstructsand analyses three theories of social acceleration, together with three proposals on how to address its pathological effects. Specifically, it presents Kojève’s theory, highlighting his claim that acceleration is a factor of dehumanisation; Koselleck’s, which argues that it is a cause of uprooting; and Rosa’s, which conceives it as a source of alienation. It then examines three proposals, interpreting them as re-sponses to each of these diagnoses: Rosa’s own proposal, which draws on the concept of resonanceas a remedy for alienation; Agamben’s, which advances what he calls a life of “use” in response to the dehumanising logic of capitalism emphasised by Kojève; and accelerationist proposals, which advocate overcoming the uprooting diagnosed by Koselleck by radicalising it. The article concludes by arguing for the need to avoid indis-criminately demonising social acceleration, since doing so hinders imagining normatively persuasive strategies to confront it
