Description
Abstract
Abstract: During the difficult years of the civil war between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians, Christine de Pisan wrote her Epistre à la royne (The Epistle to the Queen) with the aim of promoting, at least in theory, the mediation of Queen Elizabeth of Bavaria in the conflict. Following a model she would also use in other works such as Cité des Dames (The City of Ladies), the author incorporates models of sovereign women who, in the biblical, Greco-Roman, or French past, faced conflicts in which their husbands or sons were involved, either through their own fault or due to the hostility of others. In all cases, the women's judicious attitude saved the day, although certain female anti-models are also described whose behavior led to disaster. The author presents all of them as a guide to the attitude that Elizabeth of Bavaria should adopt as regent of France.
