Description
Abstract
In recent times, historical linguistics studies have turned to the press as one of their fundamental sources of analysis since, especially in the 19th century, this written medium spread throughout all strata of society and ceased to be a medium of the elite. In fact, it came to be considered the book of the poor because many individuals acquired reading skills through its pages. In this sense, this research aims to study the Murcian press of the 19th century in order to reconstruct the linguistic variety used in that territory. This work will provide us with completely new data to understand how it was forged, how it evolved, what characteristics it had, and what attitudes and ideologies were held towards it. It is precisely the impetus provided by the 19th century, under the auspices of Romanticism and costumbrismo, that probably contributed to the forging of regional identity. In short, this innovative research is part of the current lines of diachrony of Spanish and highlights the importance of one of the greatest assets of a society: language.
