Description
Abstract
del οὐκ ἔστιν ἀντιλέγειν.
In this paper, I propose new arguments to show that Protagoras did not defend the impossibility of contradiction. First, I present a critical analysis of Euthydemus, 286b8-c4 (DK 80 A 19), the only testimony where Protagoras and his followers apparently held the οὐκ ἔστιν ἀντιλέγειν maxim. Then, based on the thesis according to which there can be two contrasting arguments about everything (Diogenes Laertius, IX 51 1-2; DK 80 B 6a), I explore the epistemological grounds of Protagorean antilogy and I present some concrete examples of it taken from Aristophanes’ Clouds, Plato’s Protagoras and the anonymous treatise called Dissoì lógoi.
