Abstract
Cada vez son más las universidades, tanto públicas como privadas, que utilizan y
promueven el empleo de software libre entre la comunidad universitaria y en la sociedad,
en general. Las universidades, como pieza clave de una sociedad moderna deben apostar
claramente por una forma de socialización del conocimiento que respete la autoría de las
obras, al tiempo que posibilite que el conocimiento generado sea más accesible a través de
Internet. En este trabajo, una vez analizadas las características del software libre y el marco
normativo que regula su utilización en las universidades, se detallan algunas experiencias
de su promoción y uso en diversas universidades catalanas
