Resumen: Aunque injustamente descuidada, la obra de Georges d’Esparbès permite estudiar un aspecto poco conocido de la “nouvelle” francesa de fines del siglo XIX: el relato heroico. En colecciones como La Légende de l’Aigle, La Guerre en dentelles o La Grogne, el novelista transpone las hazañas guerreras de los ejércitos de Luis XV y de Napoleón de manera épica. Próximo de la estética idealista, d’Esparbès es ante todo
un escritor prendado de lo legendario, con lo que eso supone de simpleza e ingenuidad. No obstante su obra está lejos de ser tranquilizante. Sombría y cruel, evoca la guerra en todo su horror, a veces bajo forma de cuadros apocalípticos al modo de Léon Bloy. En eso d’Esparbès atestigua el traumatismo causado por la derrota francesa de 1870.
Abstract: Left behind, the work of Georges d’Esparbès allows us to study a little-known aspect of the French short story at the end of the 19th century: the heroic tale. In books such as La Légende de l’Aigle, La Guerre en dentelles or La Grogne, the short story writer transposes the heroic deeds of Louis XV’s and Napoleon’s armies into the epic mode. Close to idealist aesthetics, he is first and foremost a writer enamoured of legend, with all that that implies in terms of simplicity and naivety. For all that, his work is far from being reassuring. Dark and cruel, it evokes the war in all its horror, sometimes in the form of apocalyptic tableaux in the style of Léon Bloy. Thus, d’Esparbès testifies to the trauma caused by the French defeat of 1870.
