- PublicationOpen AccessEl comercio exterior de Puerto Rico entre dos imperios, 1879-1923(Instituto de Investigaciones Dr. José María Luis Mora de Mexico, 2020-12-11) Martínez Soto, Ángel Pascual; García Gómez, José Joaquín; Pérez de Perceval Verde, Miguel Ángel; Economía Aplicada; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThis article reconstructs, using the direct and indirect sources available, the flows of Puerto Rico’s foreign trade in the last decades of 19th century, under the control exercised by Spain as a colonial metropolis, and the first decades of the 20th century, under colonial control of the United States. These magnitudes have been analysed to understand its evolution and to know its geographical structure, both in general and for each of the colonial periods (1875-1897 and 1898-1923). Finally, the structure of foreign trade is analysed to shed light on the different product flows. The conclusions suggest that, while there had been a geographical restructuring of foreign trade since 1882, the US annexation allowed integration into a higher-growth market, and increasing the volume of foreign trade, the investment floows and the national income of the island.
- PublicationOpen AccessFemale Workers in the Spanish Mines, 1860-1936(Cambridge University Press, 2019-11-04) Pérez de Perceval Verde, Miguel Ángel; Martínez Soto, Ángel Pascual; García Gómez, José Joaquín; Economía Aplicada; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThis article analyses female labour in Spanish mines during the golden age of the sector in Spain between 1860 and 1936. Although theywere a small percentage of total employment, women accounted for a significant share of the workforce in certain Spanish districts. On the one hand, the study quantifies work performed directly by women, who were mostly engaged in preparation and concentration of the minerals, as well as the extent of female child labour. This has been done by using official statistics, analysing the share of women employed for each type of mineral extracted, the mining area where this activity took place, and other variables. In the article, the authors seek to identify possible causes of such a heterogeneous distribution of female labour in the mining industry in Spain. This situation was common in the sector throughout the world. On the other hand, the article analyses attitudes of institutions, unions, and the like that limited employment opportunities for women in mining (banning them from performing underground tasks and other activities) and even proposed excluding them altogether, responding to workers’ demands in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. We examine the objectives pursued by these institutions, which in some cases relatedto protection(physical andmoral) of femaleworkersbut overall aimed mainly to preserve the social role of women (particularly reproduction) and exclude them from the workforce. The pressure on female workers was the most pronounced in the workplace. These factors gave rise to a global setback in female employment, especially among the youngest workers. Given this situation, the quantitative data used, together with information drawn from different sources, reveal that women resisted giving up these jobs, particularly in the districts with a larger share of female workers.
- PublicationOpen AccessFamilia y presupuestos familiares de los trabajadores de una gran empresa minera a principios del siglo XX: Rio Tinto Co Ltd(Universitat de Barcelona, 2023-03-31) Martínez Soto, Ángel Pascual; Trescastro-López, Eva María; Pérez de Perceval Verde, Miguel Ángel; Economía Aplicada; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThe first mining of the industrial revolution was characterised using a high volume of labour and the fact that a large part of the work was carried out underground. This made it necessary to have a considerable proportion of workers specialised in activities related to the mining work itself and who were accustomed to working deep underground. The dependence on this labour force and the need to maintain the mining settlements led to the development of employer strategies that were oriented towards industrial paternalism in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. This article analyses the case of Rio Tinto Co Ltd, which can serve as a model for the forms of mining organisation. For this purpose, we rely on exceptional company documentation and the study of local records.
