Herzog Vindicated: Integrative Taxonomy Reveals That Trichostomum brachydontium (Pottiaceae, Bryophyta) Comprises Several Species
(2022-01-21) Porley, Ron D.; Ros Espín, Rosa María; Werner, Olaf; Biología Vegetal
The morphologically variable moss Trichostomum brachydontium is very common in south and west Europe, particularly under Mediterranean and Atlantic climates. A morphological study was conducted alongside a molecular phylogenetic study based on nr ITS and cp-rbcL regions in order to assess if T. brachydontium is an exceptionally polymorphic species as evidenced by the number of described infraspecific taxa in the last century or, alternatively, if it includes more than one species, and if so, to find the valid name for them. Phylogenetic analyses of both nuclear and chloroplast datasets show that there are four well-supported clades. While the ITS-based tree is in good agreement with the morphological data, there are a few inconsistencies with reference to the rbcL tree; this may be explained by incomplete lineage sorting by hybridization or by the persistence of isolated ancestral molecular races. The morphological survey revealed well-defined discriminate differences between the four phylogenetic lineages. The taxonomic conclusions include the recognition of four species: T. brachydontium s.s., T. herzogii (a new name proposed for var. cuspidatum), T. littorale, and T. meridionale (a new name proposed for var. densum). Lectotypes are designated for T. brachydontium and T. littorale. Our results underline the ongoing need of integrative studies to examine further the underestimated diversity of the T. brachydontium complex in other regions.

lnvertase (E.C. 3.2.1.26) and inulinase (E.C. 3.2.1. 7) were analyzed in Candida utilis CECT 1061 to determine whether one single enzyme with both activities or two enzymes with different substrate specificities were present in this yeast. The synthesis of both fructofuranosidase activities was under control of catabolite repression by glucose and they were present in whole cell extracts as well as in the extracellular culture fluids. The cell-associated activities appear mostly located in the periplasmic space. The two activities exhíbited an identical optimum pH and similar profiles of thermal denaturation. In addition, a constan! ratio was found between the inulinase and the invertase activities in a variety of culture condítions when extracellular media or cell extracts were assayed. From the results obtained it was concluded that both activities reside in a same protein of molecular weight close to 450,000 dalton which shows a different affiníty for sucrose and inuline, Km values were 14 and 0,62mM. respectively.

Bryophyte diversity in the Guadiamar river basin (SW of Spain)
(Murcia: Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2002) Cano Bernabé, María Jesús; Gallego Morales, María Teresa; Guerra Montes, Juan; Jiménez Fernández, Juan Antonio; Ros Espín, Rosa María; Sin departamento asociado; Facultad de Biología
A study of the bryophyte flora of the Guadiamar river basin (southwes tern Spain) was carried out. Forty-one localities along this river and its main tributaries were sampled. A total of 123 taxa are mentioned, of which 93 are mosses, 27 liverworts and 3 hornworts. Scopelophila cataractae (Mitt.) Broth., which grows exclusively on soils rich in heavy metals, is the second record from the Iberian Peninsula

Bryophyte Check-list of Murcia Province (Southeastern Spain)
(Murcia: Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2004) Cano Bernabé, María Jesús; Gallego Morales, María Teresa; Guerra Montes, Juan; Jiménez Fernández, Juan Antonio; Ros Espín, Rosa María; Biología Vegetal; Facultad de Biología
A check-list of the bryophytes of Murcia province is provided. Bryophyte diversity in Murcia consists of 200 taxa (74 genera) of mosses and 32 taxa (20 genera) of liverworts. Pseudocrossidium obtusulum is reported as new to the Iberian Peninsula. A total of 30 taxa are new record from Murcia: Acaulon casasianum, Astomum levieri, Bryoerythrophyllum recurvirostrum, Crossidium laevipilum, Entosthodon convexus, Grimmia dissimulata, Gymnostomum lanceolatum, Hedwigia ciliata, Orthotrichum affine, O. pumilum, O. scanicum, O. schimperi, O. striatum, O. tenellum, O. tortidontium, O. vittii, Philonotis fontana, Pleuridium acuminatum, Pohlia cruda, Pterygoneurum subsessile, Rhynchostegiella tenella, Schistidium crassipilum, Schistidium singarense, Syntrichia virescens, Tortula canescens, T. mucronifolia, Weissia brachycarpa, W. condensa var. armata, Athalamia hyalina, and Jungermannia atrovirens. Thirty eight taxa (33 mosses and 5 liverworts) are excluded from the check list or represent doubtful reports for Murcia.
