- PublicationRestrictedThe role of relationship promoter in new product development collaboration(Taylor and Francis Group. Routledge, 2020-06-20) Sánchez-Marín, Gregorio; Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Munuera Alemán, José Luis; Organización de Empresas y FinanzasSince new product development (NPD) collaborations with external partners have become the next generation in NPD practices, relationship promoters have become especially relevant as key contributors to the success of this type of inter-organisational collaboration. To realise successful outcomes in NPD collaborations, partners face the challenge of effectively integrating the role of relationship promoter into their existing and essential relationships of trust. It is within this context that this paper examines the role of the relationship promoter, by analysing its moderating effect on the relationship between trust and the outcomes of NPD collaboration – including new product competitiveness and partner satisfaction. We test our hypotheses against survey data from 107 innovative firms involved in NPD collaboration with the help of relationship promoters. The results show that, while a non-significant influence can be reported about the presence of a relationship promoter in terms of partner satisfaction, the relationship promotor weakens the influence of trust on new product competitiveness, making trust less important when it comes to creating a competitive new product.

- PublicationOpen AccessHow are companies going to business digitalization? An explanation based on the implementation of e-commerce with data of SMEs(Elsevier Inc., 2024-08-02) Gimeno Arias, Fernando; Santos Jaén, José Manuel; Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Economía Financiera y ContabilidadThe data presented in this article is based on a questionnaire survey regarding e-commerce and business digitalization of SMEs in Mexico answered by the CEOs of the companies. A valid sample of 4,121 Mexican SMEs was collected covering many industries, such as primary sector, extractive industries, manufacturing industries, energy, water, recycling, construction, trade, services, and others. The data includes information about the implementation of e-commerce, business digitalization, operational efficiency, corporate performance, and other demographic indicators of the sampling firms. The link between e-commerce and corporate performance is still underexplored in SMEs, even more so between companies from Latin America, being Mexico a perfect example to explore how different SMEs adapt and thrive due to the rapid growth of their e-commerce and the diversity of their business sectors (Santos-Jan et al., 2023 *2+). Data analysis was conducted using SPSS and Smart PLS. The data are useful as the data can be reproduced, reused and reanalysed paying special attention to group-specific effects. This data article also opens up better research opportunities going forward through collaboration with other researchers.SMEs
- PublicationRestrictedThe impact of networking practices on small firm innovativeness and performance: a multivariate approach(2010-02-05) Parida, Vinit; Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Frishammar, Johan; Organización de Empresas y FinanzasInnovation is a complex process and this is especially true in the context of small firms. Therefore, networking has been suggested as a feasible strategy to achieve innovation. Although networking as such is multidimensional, the current paper focuses on two key aspects – Networking Capability (NC) and network configuration. Our main purpose is to examine how both these variables influence small firm innovativeness and firm performance. Empirically, we draw on data from 291 technology-based small Swedish firms. The results reveal that network configuration positively influences firm innovativeness, whereas NC has a strong positive impact on firm innovativeness and firm performance.
- PublicationOpen AccessFamily firms and the collaborative advantage: unveiling innovation efficiency across partnership types(2024-05-28) Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Organización de Empresas y FinanzasPurpose – This paper aims to examine whether family firms are more efficient in their collaboration for innovation process than non-family firms, considering different types of collaboration for innovation depending on the kind of partner. Methodology – This study empirically develops and tests the hypotheses based on a panel data sample of 14,937 firm-year observations from 1,867 Spanish manufacturing firms over the period 2007-2014, performing a Propensity Score Matching (PSM)-based analysis. Findings – Results reveal that family firms outperform non-family firms, despite less collaboration and innovation inputs, thereby extending the ongoing debate surrounding the innovation efficiency of family firms. Family firms obtained better results through vertical collaborations for innovation, both in terms of product and process innovations. For horizontal collaborations, family firms only outperform their non-family counterparts in process innovation. When collaborating with universities and other research centres, there are no significant differences in the innovation outcomes between the two groups. Originality – The recent work of Block et al. (2023) points out that more research is needed to know when, how and under what circumstances family firms show superior innovative efficiency. This work empirically proves that family firms outperform nonfamily firms in collaboration for innovation. However, not all collaboration partners help family firms to reach this superior innovative efficiency. Family firms obtained better results just through vertical and horizontal collaborations.
- PublicationOpen AccessIs the formalization of NPD collaboration productive or counterproductive? Contingent effects of trust between partners(SAGE Publications, 2020-05-18) Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Rodriguez-Escudero, Ana I.; Organización de Empresas y FinanzasNew product development (NPD) collaborations with external partners involve high coordination costs and run substantial risks. Formalization seems to be an effective mechanism to mitigate said costs and risks, although the issue of whether formalization actually proves productive or counterproductive remains an open question. This study empirically analyses the direct impact of formalization and the interaction effect between formalization and trust between partners in order to gauge their influence on NPD collaboration performance. Findings indicate that formalization directly boosts the quality and novelty of the new product developed in collaboration, but that it does not affect adherence to schedule. In addition, trust reinforces the productive effect of formalization on new product quality and novelty, and makes the impact of formalization on adherence to schedule positive. However, without trust, we find a null impact of formalization on new product quality and a counterproductive impact on adherence to schedule. These results suggest that formalization and trust may complement each other, reinforcing each other’s positive effect on new product quality and novelty and presenting a positive synergistic effect, while helping to overcome the counterproductive effect of formalization on adherence to schedule.
- PublicationOpen AccessTechnology policy, environmental conditions, and R&D organisations' shaping: a combined population ecology and resource dependence perspective(2022-11-04) Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Organización de Empresas y FinanzasThis paper analyzes the influence of regional technology policy on the evolution of R&D organizations. Specifically, combining population ecology and resource dependence perspectives, this research examines how technology policies impact environmental conditions of technological centres (TCs) affecting organizational change and surviving. To empirically test our assumptions, this research uses a comparative case study research design analyzing changes promoted by the Basque regional technology policy in the environment where the TCs’ inhabit, between 1980 and 2000. Our findings shed light to the understanding of policy making in R&D organizations, contributing to the debate on the importance of regional innovation systems, the organizational adaptation to multi actor governance, and the blurring organizational boundaries between public and private spheres of TCs.
- PublicationRestrictedNPD collaboration in an asymmetrical investment context: A relational view(Elsevier, 2017-08-05) Pemartín González-Adalid, María; Rodríguez-Escudero, Ana I.; Organización de Empresas y FinanzasIn order to contribute to the discussion concerning how to organize NPD collaboration aimed at improving results, the present exploratory empirical research adopts a relational perspective to analyze said phenomenon. First, we study the impact of two key sources of relational rents, communication quality and trust, on new product performance. Second, we analyze the moderating impact of relationship investment asymmetry in said relationships. Using a sample of 207 NPD collaboration projects undertaken by innovative firms, empirical findings indicate that communication quality and trust are both positively related to new product performance. Nevertheless, these effects depend on the relative asymmetry of partner investment. Under conditions of symmetrical investment or near symmetrical investment (small differences between partner investment), managers should stress the quality of communication. Yet, whenever they recognize that project investments might not be balanced, they should analyze the expected degree of investment asymmetry. In medium-high asymmetrical relationships, managers should seek a partner they already trust if they wish to be successful. For low-medium differences in partner investment, managers can combine the two strategies, communication quality and trust, since both contribute positively to new product performance.
