Integrative taxonomy reveals hidden diversity in the Aloina catillum Complex (Pottiaceae, Bryophyta)

Aloina catillum is a variable moss typical of xerophytic environments in the Neotropics, characterized against other closely allied Aloina species with well-differentiated leaf border by its setae twisted to the left throughout. In order to clarify its variability and its relationships with the allied species with differentiated leaf border A. brevirostris, A. obliquifolia, and A. rigida, we performed an integrative study including sequence data from four markers (nuclear ITS, plastid atpB-rbcL, trnG, trnL-F), morphometry, and species assembling by automatic partitioning (ASAP) algorithm. Our data suggest that A. catillum consists of at least three species: A. calceolifolia (an earlier name for A. catillum), and two species described here as a new, A. bracteata sp. nov. and A. limbata sp. nov. This latter species includes the specimens previously identified as A. obliquifolia from South America. Additionally, some morphological and molecular variability was also detected in A. limbata, but was not consistent enough to be recognized taxonomically. The study supports the presence of A. brevirostris in the Neotropics and A. rigida is tentatively excluded from South America. Full descriptions of the A. catillum s.l. species and a diagnostic key to this complex in South America are provided.

A new species of Chionoloma (Pottiaceae) from Central and South America with a key to Neotropical species of the genus

A new species of Chionoloma Dixon, C. fractum M.Alonso, M.J.Cano & J.A.Jiménez, is described from Central and South America (Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela). The species is distinguished morphologically by lanceolate or linear leaves, with apices usually broken, leaf margins strongly sinuous, basal marginal cells forming a V-shaped pattern, dorsal surface cells of the costa quadrate-round and papillose toward apex, costa percurrent or excurrent in a short mucro and central strand present. Drawings and light microscope photographs of the new species are provided. Moreover, the principal distinctive characters that separate it from the nearest species of Chionoloma are discussed and a key to Neotropical species of the genus is provided.

A multilocus phylogeny of the moss genus Didymodon and allied genera (Pottiaceae): generic delimitations and their implications for systematics

Didymodon s.l. is one of the largest genera in the moss family Pottiaceae, with about 122 species distributed in all continents. This, together with its high degree of morphological variation, has made it one of the taxonomically most challenging genera of Pottiaceae. Circumscription of Didymodon s.l. has been, and still is, controversial. To date, the only molecular study that has investigated the delimitation of the genus has been far from comprehensive (35 samples from 27 species), limited in geographical scope (mainly restricted to Europe), and based exclusively on ITS sequences. To evaluate the circumscription of Didymodon s.l. and its relationships with the allied genera Andinella, Gertrudiella, and Tridontium, we conducted phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequences for three plastid markers (atpB–rbcL, trnG, and trnL‐F) and one nuclear locus (ITS) for 335 samples representing 86 species of Didymodon s.l. (ca. 70%), and all taxa of the genera Andinella, Gertrudiella, and Tridontium. Individual markers and concatenated matrices were analyzed using maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches. Our results indicate that Didymodon s.l. is not monophyletic, because Andinella, Gertrudiella, and Tridontium species are nested within it. Species of these four genera can be divided into eight well‐supported and morphologically distinct genera: Didymodon s.s., Geheebia, Gertrudiella, Husnotiella, Trichostomopsis, Tridontium, Vinealobryum, and Zanderella. In correspondence with the results presented, 38 new combinations, 10 new synonyms, and a new name are provided for those taxa where required, and lectotypes are designated for 13 names. A diagnostic key to the eight recognized genera is provided.

Hymenostylium chapadense M.J.Cano & J.A.Jiménez (Pottiaceae), a new species from Brazil and its phylogenetic position based on molecular data

In the context of a taxonomic revision of the tribe Pleuroweisieae in South America, we studied a specimen of Hymenostylium that did not match any previously known species of this genus in America. Here we present our arguments for recognising this moss as a new species.The morphology of the potential new species was compared with that of the species of Hymenostylium presently recognised. A phylogenetic analysis based on the nuclear ITS and plastid rps4 regions was performed to investigate relationships between the new species and closely related taxa. Based on morphological and molecular data, we describe this new species from Brazil, Hymenostylium chapadense M.J.Cano & J.A.Jiménez. The species is strikingly distinguished by a stem with central strand and hyalodermis, oblong-ligulate to oblong-elliptical leaves that are when dry slightly crisped in the upper part and usually constricted just above the base and recurved on one side in the lower third, with uni- to bistratose margins, obtuse apex, costa wide and ending below the apex or percurrent with ventral and dorsal surface cells of the costa differentiated as an epidermis, and middle laminal cells usually with a simple, coarse, central papilla. Our molecular study placed H. chapadense as sister to H. hildebrandtii (Müll.Hal.) R.H.Zander. Possible confusion with the latter species and other closely related taxa is discussed. A key to the South American species of Hymenostylium is provided.

Pseudosymblepharis perlongifolia (Bryophyta, Pottiaceae), a neglected species from Malaysia new for América

The Asian moss Pseudosymblepharis perlongifolia, previously known only from Malaysia, is reported for the first time for America on the basis of several collections from Maricao (Puerto Rico). The principal distinctive characters that separate it from the nearest species of Pseudosymblepharis and related genera are discussed. The species is described and illustrated.

Novedades corológicas para la flora briofítica ibérica. XI

Se dan a conocer 26 novedades corológicas provinciales correspondientes a 17 taxones de briófitos en España, recolectados principalmente en diferentes campañas de campo realizadas entre los años 2023 y 2025. Destaca el hallazgo de Neckera cephalonica en Navarra y de dos nuevas localidades de Entosthodon mouretii, que constituyen nuevas citas para las provincias de Cáceres y Toledo. Además, se aporta una nueva localidad para Pyramidula tetragona especie catalogada como amenazada en Europa.

A molecular approach to the phylogeny of the moss genus Pseudocrossidium (Pottiaceae, Bryopsida) and its taxonomic implications

Pseudocrossidium is a genus of 21 species belonging to the Pottiaceae with the highest concentration of taxa and morphological variation found in South America. To investigate the evolutionary relationships among the species of Pseudocrossidium and other members of the Pottioideae, molecular phylogenetic reconstructions, using the nuclear ITS1‐5.8S‐ITS2, and the plastid atpB‐rbcL, trnG, and trnL‐F, has been performed because this genus has only been partially tested using molecular markers. Bayesian and maximum likelihood topologies show that the genus, as presently circumscribed, is polyphyletic. Consequently, the circumscription of Pseudocrossidium is amended and numerous taxonomic changes resulting from the molecular, morphological, and nomenclatural studies are proposed. The phylogenetic and morphologically divergent Pseudocrossidium mendozense is renamed as Gertrudiella mendozensis. Pseudocrossidium linearifolium and P. porphyreoneurum are representatives of the new genera Barbulastrum and Helicobarbula, respectively. Pseudocrossidium carinatum and P. santiagense are accommodated in a new genus Austrobarbula. Aloinella, nested in a paraphyletic Pseudocrossidium, is maintained at generic rank, apparently derived from Pseudocrossidium. Barbula integrifolia, B. riograndensis, and Tortula jaffuelii are transferred to Pseudocrossidium. The remaining species of Pseudocrossidium are maintained in this genus, pending further studies. Conflicts of the trees observed could be evidence of interspecific or intergeneric gene flow in various lineages in the Pottioideae.

Didymodon edentulus (Bryophyta, Pottiaceae), a new Andean species from the Cordillera Occidental in Peru

Didymodon edentulus J.A. Jiménez & M.J. Cano, is described and illustrated as a new Andean species from the Cordillera Occidental in north-central Peruvian departments of Ancash, La Libertad and Lima. It is characterized mainly by its appressed leaves when dry, plane margins above midleaf, smooth laminal cells, oblate and transversely thick-walled marginal basal cells, differentiated perichaetial leaves and gymnostomous capsules. Its distinction from, and relationships with some closely related species within the genus are discussed.
