- PublicationOpen AccessLexical language-related episodes in pair and small group work(2017-06-28) Garcia Mayo, Maria del Pilar; Zeitler, NoraThe present study investigates whether learner set up in interaction, namely in pairs or small groups, influences the frequency and outcome of lexical language-related episodes (LREs) and L2 vocabulary learning. Thirty Spanish English as a foreign language (EFL) university learners took part in the study. They worked in four groups and seven pairs on the same collaborative writing task. Research was carried out on the course of five weeks as a pre- and post- vocabulary task and an individual writing task were administered to assess vocabulary learning and retention. The quantitative analysis of the data showed that there was no significant difference between the performance of pairs and groups, although the latter produced slightly more lexical LREs than pairs and were able to solve most of them correctly. However, from a qualitative point of view, the findings suggest that small group work leads to slightly better results than pair work as the different members obtain benefits from their peers' linguistic knowledge.

- PublicationOpen AccessDecolonizing Othello in search of black feminist North American identities: Djanet Sears' Harlem duet and Toni Morrison's Desdemona(2017-06-28) Cucarella-Ramon, VicentThe plays Harlem duet (1997) by African Canadian playwright Djanet Sears and Desdemona (2012) by Toni Morrison signify upon European texts aiming to carve out a new definition of what it means to be black in North America. Therefore both texts make for interesting reading in the study of (black) identity construction within US and Canadian contexts for, by revising Shakespeare's Othello, they rethink and rewrite a social and racial reality unrelentingly disrupted by difference and hybridity. Sears' play establishes a specific reading of Canadianness in dialogue with African America to erect a possibility of healing and inclusion, offering a feminist vision of the black self. Similarly, Morrison inscribes the voice of Africa within the US to conclude Sears' account of a feminist and transnational subjectivity for blacks in North America. By reversing the manly ethos that characterized Shakespeare's story and bringing the role of women to the front, both plays succeed in readjusting the Shakespearean story to render a feminist, transnational, cosmopolitan and democratic definition of the black female self.
- PublicationOpen AccessHow Der Sklavenkrieg became The gladiators: Reflections on Edith Simon's translation of Arthur Koestler's novel(2017-06-28) MacAdam, Henry InnesAll German original manuscripts of Arthur Koestler's first two novels (The Gladiators and Darkness at noon) were lost during World War II. A MS of each was recently recovered, allowing for the first time a comparison with their initial English translations, for almost 80 years the basis of all other translations. Both novels will be published in German and in a new English translation that allows comparison with the original English editions. This article provides context for the first translation of Der Sklavenkrieg by Edith Simon (1917-2003), through correspondence with Simon's younger sister Inge Simon Goodwin (1923-2014), and Simon's daughter, Antonia Reeve. It also briefly addresses some editorial changes in the table of contents for The Gladiators, anomalies within Simon's rendition of descriptive prose, and an example of Simon's skills as translator of Koestler's imaginative prose. These are preliminary observations only, in anticipation of the novel's retranslation and republication in 2018.
