- PublicationOpen AccessEffect of adding high-intensity strengthening exercises to conventional physiotherapy in athletes with shoulder impingement syndrome: A randomized controlled trial(Servicio de Publicaciones. Universidad de Murcia, 2025) Fayaz, Nadia Abdelazeem; Amr, Mohamed; Aboelwafa, Nagwa; Ibrahim, Mona Mohamed; Gamiel, Abdallah; Sin departamento asociadoThis study aimed to investigate the effect of adding high-intensity strengthening exercises (HISE) to the conventional physiotherapy program in athletes with shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). Thirty-two athletes with SIS were randomly and equally assigned into two groups; HISE group (n=16) and conventional physiotherapy group (n=16). The HISE group received both HISE and conventional physiotherapy programs, while the conventional physiotherapy group received only the conventional physiotherapy program. Both groups received a total of 18 sessions at a rate of 3 sessions/week for six weeks. Outcome measures included shoulder function and performance, muscle strength of the external and internal rotators and supraspinatus, acromio-humeral distance at 0° and 90° abduction, and supraspinatus tendon thickness. There was a significant improvement in shoulder performance (p=0.029), shoulder muscle strength of external rotators at 0 abduction (p<0.001) and at 90-90 abduction/external rotation (p<0.001), internal rotators at 0 abduction (p=0.001) and at 90-90 abduction/external rotation (p=0.001), and supraspinatus muscle (p<0.001), acromio-humeral distance at 0 (p=0.031) and 90 degrees of active abduction (p<0.001), and supraspinatus tendon thickness (p=0.009) in the HISE group compared to the conventional physiotherapy group post-treatment. However, no significant difference was observed in shoulder function (p=0.259). It could be concluded that the addition of supervised progressive HISE to the conventional physiotherapy in SIS in athletes improves shoulder performance, muscle strength, acromio-humeral distance, and supraspinatus tendon thickness.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffect of different types of exercise on fitness in people with multiple sclerosis: a network meta-analysis(Wiley, 2023-05-24) Reina Gutiérrez, Sara; Meseguer Henarejos, Ana Belén; Torres Costoso, Ana; Álvarez Bueno, Celia; Cavero Redondo, Iván; Núñez de Arenas Arroyo, Sergio; Guzmán Pavón, María José; Sánchez López, Mairena; Martínez Vizcaíno, Vicente; FisioterapiaBackground: It is assumed that people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who participate in programs of physical exercise improve their physical fitness. Objective: The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to analyze the effect of different types of exercise on muscular fitness and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) among people with MS and to determine the best type of exercise according to disease severity. Methods: MEDLINE, the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, the Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched from inception to April 2022 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concerning the effect of physical exercise on fitness in people with MS. We ranked the types of physical exercise by calculating the surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA). Results: We included 72 RCTs involving 2543 MS patients in this NMA. A ranking of five types of physical exercise (aerobic, resistance, combined [aerobic and resistance], sensorimotor training, and mind–body exercises) was achieved. Combined and resistance training had the highest effect sizes (0.94, 95% CI 0.47, 1.41, and 0.93, 95% CI 0.57, 1.29, respectively) and the highest SUCRA (86.2% and 87.0%, respectively) for muscular fitness. The highest effect size (0.66, 95% CI 0.34, 0.99) and SUCRA (86.9%) for CRF was for aerobic exercise. Conclusions: Combined and resistance training seem to be the most effective exercises to improve muscular fitness and aerobic exercise for CRF in people with MS.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffects of neuropilates on functional outcomes in chronic stroke: a randomized clinical trial(MDPI, 2024-04-17) García Bravo, Cristina; Delgado Lobete, Laura; Montes Montes, Rebeca; Rodríguez Pérez, María Pilar; Trugeda Pedrajo, Nuria; Fernández Gómez, Gemma; García Bravo, Sara; Atención Sociosanitaria; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Ciencias Sociosanitarias (Lorca)Neuropilates is an intervention approach that was developed as a modified version of the Pilates Method to be used for neurological rehabilitation. The main objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of regular physiotherapy and occupational therapy rehabilitation in comparison to a combination of traditional rehabilitation with Neuropilates in adults with post-stroke motor disabilities. This was a rater- and analyst-blinded randomized clinical trial with a three-month intervention and a one-month follow up. Participants were randomly allocated to either the experimental group (EG, receiving a combination of conventional therapy and Neuropilates; n = 15) or the control group (CG, receiving solely conventional therapy; n = 15). Once adjusted for baseline FIM scores, the results showed significant differences favoring the EG in daily functioning (FIM), static balance (FRT), right-hand manual dexterity (NHPT) and right-upper limb coordination (BBT). Satisfaction with the received treatment as measured with the CSQ-8 was significantly higher for the EG. In conclusion, the incorporation of Neuropilates, facilitated by a single experienced therapist, can be a valuable complement to conventional physical and occupational therapy. However, Neuropilates-based interventions should be supervised and tailored to each individual by a professional specifically trained in the method.

- PublicationOpen AccessFactors Associated with Parents' Adherence to Different Types of Exercises in Home Programs for Children with Disabilities(2019-04-05) Lillo Navarro, Carmen; Montilla Herrador, Joaquina; Escolar Reina, Pilar; Oliveira Sousa, Silvana Loana de; García Vidal, José Antonio; Medina Mirapeix, Francesc; FisioterapiaThere is a lack of knowledge with regard to the adherence to different types of exercises prescribed for children with disabilities. The aim was to examine parents' adherence to prescriptions of different types of home exercises; to identify associated factors related to the parents, the children and the environment, and to assess the relative influence of the behaviour of health professionals. Parents (393) were recruited from 18 early intervention centres. A cross-sectional survey using a self-reported questionnaire was used to examine whether three types of exercises ("flexibility exercises", "neuromotor development training" and "body mechanics and postural stabilisation") were prescribed in their home programs; if the child had received exercises according to a prescription; and items related to the parents, child, environment, and health professionals. The adherence rates were different among the types of exercises. Parents with low perception of barriers and high self-efficacy had a higher adherence to neuromotor development training and postural stabilization, whereas parents with a high level of knowledge increased their odds of adherence to flexibility exercises. Health professionals' behaviour had a distinct influence on the adherence to different exercises. This study suggests the need to specifically consider the types of exercises prescribed in the management of adherence to home programs.
- PublicationOpen AccessKnowledge and adherence to osteoarthritis clinical practice guidelines among physiotherapists in Saudi Arabia: a cross sectional study(Universidad de Murcia.
- PublicationOpen AccessPatient's commitment to practicing home therapeutic exercises correctly(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Almalty, Abdulmajeed R.; Mashaal, Ahmed Hussein; Hawamdeh, Mohannad; Sin departamento asociadoHome exercises are targeted exercises for specific muscles or muscle groups to be done by the patient at home without supervision. Prescribing physiotherapy home exercises is one of the most essential aspects of the treatment plan for any patient. The aim of this study was to explore the problem of adherence to physiotherapy home exercise in Jordan and find out the main obstacles that face Jordanian citizens in applying their prescribed home exercises. An online survey accessed through a hyperlink was directed to clients (n=76 ; 50% female, 50% male ) of physiotherapy centers in Jordan, aged 18 22 years. The link to survey was given to clients who were asked to re share the link with them friends and relatives who visit other physiotherapy centers on regular basis in order to reach maximum number of participants. Low adherence to home exercises could be attributed to participants’ laziness, no time and not understanding what they were supposed to do. However, regarding p erceived importance and benefits , most declared the need for home exercise and stated that they could help with everyday activities if done regularly, despite the poor level of commitment.
- PublicationOpen AccessSex-Related Differences in Physical Therapy Career Expectations in Taif, Saudi Arabia.(Servicio de Publicaciones. Universidad de Murcia, 2025) Dewir, Ibrahim M.; Sin departamento asociadoBackground and Aims: Physical therapy is a critical component of healthcare, and women have historically dominated the field yet are underrepresented in leadership roles. Understanding these disparities is essential. This study investigates sex-based differences in career expectations among physical therapy students in Taif, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from June to December 2024, involving 105 participants (66 males and 39 females) from Taif University. Data were collected via an electronic survey adapted from Johanson’s framework, assessing demographics, specialty preferences, postgraduate aspirations, and future career expectations. Results revealed significant sex differences: males were more likely to prioritize managerial roles (92.4% vs. 48.7%) and research participation (66.7% vs. 38.5%), while females emphasized practicing as staff members (46.2% vs. 24.2%) and publishing in professional journals (35.9% vs. 28.8%). Males also perceived their practice as more prestigious compared to physicians (81.8% vs. 46.2%) and viewed their PT program as more rigorous (62.1% vs. 53.8%). Conclusion: Cultural traditions, family obligations, and gender-biased expectations emerged as major factors shaping these disparities. The results emphasize the necessity of tailored strategies—such as mentorship initiatives and career guidance—to empower female physical therapy professionals in overcoming obstacles and attaining leadership positions. This study adds to the scarce body of literature on career expectations in physical therapy within Saudi Arabia and reinforces the importance of addressing gender inequities to build a more inclusive and motivated workforce.

- PublicationOpen AccessUncertainty Tolerance in Physiotherapists: implications for their education from an observational study(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de publicaciones, 2024) Infante Guedes, Aday; Etopa Bitata, María del Pilar; Quintana Montesdeoca, María del PinoAlthough uncertainty is common in the field of physiotherapy, little research has beenconducted on the topic of uncertainty tolerance (UT). This study builds on previous research thatexplored UT in novice physiotherapists and identified their educational needs in relation to UTusing the self-developed "Tolerance to Uncertainty in Physiotherapy" (TUP) questionnaire. Thepresent work aims to explore UT in experienced physiotherapists, identify their educational needsregarding uncertainty management, and compare them with novice physiotherapists. A cross-sectional quantitative observational study was conducted involving 40 physiotherapists with anaverage work experience of 11.9 (+7.52) years participated. The results show that the evaluatedphysiotherapists had a medium-high UT with 51 points (5.99) on the TUP scale. Years ofexperience could not be confirmed as a good predictor of UT, although a trend towards improvedUT was observed (r= -0.075, p-value = 0.645). Experienced physiotherapists were less nervous oranxious about unknown diagnoses and had less difficulty switching off mentally. However, theywere in agreement with novice physiotherapists in terms of requesting more diagnostic tests ormore frequent appointments. Implementing educational programmes to improve UT during thetraining period and in experienced professionals is essential
