- PublicationOpen AccessFake or credible? Antecedents and consequences of perceived credibility in exaggerated online reviews(Elsevier, 2022-11-25) Román Nicolas, Sergio; P. Riquelme, Isabel; Iacobucci, Dawn; Comercialización e Investigación de MercadosThis research examined several antecedents (consumers’ brand identification and skepticism) and consequences (brand reputation, purchase intentions and trust of the review site) of perceived credibility of exaggerated positive online consumer reviews. Results from a sample of 1,201 consumers showed that these reviews can be perceived as authentic (for consumers with strong connections with the brand) but many consumers will be more skeptical. Consumers’ perceptions of the reviews’ credibility affected their thoughts about the brand’s reputa-tion, their purchase intentions, and their perceptions about whether the review site itself is trustworthy. This research also evidenced that these relationships are especially challenging to navigate for search versus expe-rience products. Finally, mediation paths demonstrated the processes of how consumer characteristics and their beliefs about the credibility of the online reviews affect the brand reputation, purchase intentions, and trust toward the review site. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.
- PublicationOpen AccessNightmares in “the happiest place on earth”: dissatisfaction in theme parks during the post-COVID era(2022-08-31) Mellinas, Juan Pedro; Isabel, Pascual del Riquelme; López, Manuela; Comercialización e Investigación de MercadosThis study examines the negative effects of COVID health and safety protocols implemented by theme parks in the context of the ‘new normal’ (summer 2021) on the number of visitors the park has received and their (dis)satisfaction levels. The study uses actual content analysis from 1,142 online reviews from two different time periods (before and after the COVID-19 pandemic), obtained from TripAdvisor, for a cross-country analysis. Results from analysis of variance and linear regression models show that dissatisfaction has rocketed since the pre-COVID era. Reasons for this dissatisfaction differ among parks, indicating that there may be different ways in which tourist agents can deal with these COVID protocols, ways that may be more or less successful in terms of improving consumer satisfaction.

- PublicationOpen AccessUnderstanding the impacts and motivations of duplicate reviews on Tripadvisor(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de publicaciones, 2023) Antonio, Nuno; Correia, Marisol B; Perdigão Ribeiro, FiliparipAdvisor is a popular review platform, where users post reviews for the same place, including duplicate reviews. This duplication can skew research results and visitors’ per-ceptions. To address this issue, we analyze TripAdvisor reviews in 3 languages from 20 attractions in 2 UNESCO heritage-listed cities. We identify 3 types of motivations for mul-tiple reviews: hedonic, utilitarian, and publishing issues. Our study recommends that online review platforms implement strategies to mitigate this and advises researchers to on how to overcome duplicate reviews in their research
