Un análisis desde las perspectivas de redes e input-output(2016-09-06) Noguera-Méndez, Pedro; López-Martínez, María; Semitiel-García, María; Economía AplicadaThis paper studies inter-industry structures at national level by applying traditional input-output measures and also network analysis. The main objective is to attain a better understanding of economic processes by focusing on inter-industrial structures as a main explanatory factor of the observed international disparities in development. This study shows the existence of a fundamental inter-industrial structure, common to all countries. When comparing groups of countries, there are also structural differences that are in accordance with differences in development levels, in industrial specialization and in the structural position of some industrial sectors. Those differences have an impact on the countries’ unequal development processes. This study shows that both methodologies, input-output and network analyses, are complementary and allow to attain more advanced explanations of the processes of development. By applying network theory it is possible to improve our knowledge on structural differences and its relation with economic growth and development.
- PublicationOpen AccessFishers’ participation in small-scale fisheries. A structural analysis of the Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas MPA, Spain(Elsevier, 2019-03) Noguera-Méndez, Pedro; Semitiel-García, María; Economía AplicadaThe role of traditional fishing institutions appears, paradoxically, to be waning despite scientific support and rhetoric about the value of fishers’ involvement in local marine management. Relational data of fishers have been used in this paper as a lens through which to explore the status of their participation in Marine Protected Area (MPA) management and to identify structural and contextual barriers to participation. Fieldwork was carried out during 2013–2015 in Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas MPA (CPH-MPA) using a mixed method approach involving the collection and analysis of data from institutional surveys and community meetings. The analysis shows that the fishers’ self-perception of having low influence in decision-making is consistent with the perception towards fishers of the wider social system. Several barriers and constraints to participation in CPH-MPA management are identified. The inefficient structure of the information exchange network further explained fishers’ feelings of distrust and marginalisation regarding decision-making. Understanding how structural barriers make it difficult to set in motion a collective learning process – necessary for an efficient decision-making process – breaks new ground for the design of interventions. Recommendations include clarifying the scope for participation in an appropriate institutional setting and careful consideration of the space in which dialogue takes place in order to integrate diverse knowledge and to acknowledge differential power relations.
- PublicationOpen AccessThe Centrality of Doubting and Checking in the Network Structure of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptom Dimensions in Youth(Elsevier, 2020) Cervin, Matti; Perrin, Sean; Olsson, Elin; Aspvall , Kristina; Geller, Daniel A.; Wilhelm, Sabine; McGuire, Joseph; Lázaro, Luisa; Martínez-González, Agustin E.; Barcaccia, Barbara; Pozza, Andrea; Goodman, Wayne K.; Murphy, Tanya K.; Seçer, Ismail; Piqueras, José A.; Rodríguez Jiménez, Tiscar; Godoy, Antonio; Rosa-Alcázar, Ana Isabel; Rosa-Alcázar, Ángel; Ruiz-García, Beatriz M.; Storch, Eric A.; Mataix-Cols, David; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosObjective: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous condition with well- established symptom dimensions across the lifespan. The objective of the present study was to use network analysis to investigate the internal structure and central features of these dimensions in unselected schoolchildren and in children with OCD.Method: We estimated the network structure of OCD symptom dimensions in 6,991 schoolchildren and 704 children diagnosed with OCD from 18 sites across 6 countries. All participants completed the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory—Child Version. Results: In both the school-based and clinic-based samples, the OCD dimensions formed an interconnected network with doubting/checking emerging as a highly central node, that is, exerting strong influence over other symptom dimensions in the network. The centrality of the doubting/ checking dimension was consistent across countries, sexes, age groups, clinical status, and tic disorder comorbidity. Network differences were observed for age and sex in the school-based but not the clinic-based samples. Conclusion: The centrality of doubting/checking in the network structure of childhood OCD adds to classic and recent conceptualizations of the disorder in which the important role of doubt in disorder severity and maintenance is highlighted. The present results suggest that doubting/ checking is a potentially important target for further research into the etiology and treatment of childhood OCD.
- PublicationOpen AccessThe Embeddedness of the Agro-Food System in the Spanish Interindustrial Structure(SAGE Publications, 2011-01-06) Noguera-Méndez, Pedro; Semitiel-García, María; Economía AplicadaThe agro-food system (AFS) is an integrating component of the networks behind interindustrial systems. This implies that the structure of AFSs affects and is affected by the characteristics and evolution of the more complex networks in which they are embedded. This article uses national and regional input—output data to analyze the network structure of the Spanish interindustry system for the period 1980— 2000. Network theory (NT) and social network analysis (SNA) have been applied to examine the structural position and evolution of the AFS in the whole interindustrial system. Following a systemic view, it is stated that the Spanish interindustry network follows a hierarchical topology, in which a core and a periphery can be identified. The AFS is a cohesive module occupying a peripheral position in the interindustrial structure. Those findings are very relevant from a policy perspective, as it is essential to have a deep knowledge of the structure of a system before acting on it. According to the dynamics of the analyzed national and regional AFSs, actions would imply coordination with policies focused on core sectors, mainly business services, trade and hotels and restaurants, and on sectors belonging to other production systems.
