The competitive performance in tennis practice is determined by the effectiveness of technical tactical action. The main objective of the present study was to design and validate an observational instrument with the aim of analysing the technical-tactical in singles tennis. The instrument uses the stroke as a unit of measure, so that each time a player hits a ball, a total of 23 variables are analyzed. The variables collect information about: (a) matching context; (b) result; and (c) technical-tactical information of the stroke (five variables: sequences of the stroke of the point, kind of technical and tactical stroke, bounce area, hitting, and effectiveness area). The design and validation of the instrument consisted on five different stages: (a) review of the scientific literature and variables definition by experts, (b) pilot observation study, (c) qualitative and quantitative assessment of the instrument by experts, (d) review and confirmation of the instrument by experts (content validity), and (e) observation training and reliability evaluation. From 23 expert judges, divided into three panels, and four observers the instrument went from being composed of 38 variables (eight contextual, seven related to the result and 23 related to the game) to 23 (eight contextual variables, 10 of result and five of game), with minimum Aikens’s V values of 0.94 and reliability of 0.81. The results show that the designed instrument allows obtaining valid and objective information about the technical-tactical actions of the players and their performance in singles tennis.

Design, Validation, and Reliability of an Observation Instrument or Technical and Tactical Actions of the Offense Phase in Soccer
(Frontiers Media, 2019-01-24) García Angulo, Antonio; Palao, José M.; Ortega Toro, Enrique; García Angulo, Francisco Javier; Giménez Egido, José María; Actividad Física y Deporte
The use of observational methodology in the sports context provides coaches and other sports professionals with flexible tools that adapt to their needs. In collective sports, the use of these instruments is common for the technical and tactical analysis of the game. Based on the importance of data quality in these instruments, the purpose was to design, validate, and test the reliability of a mixed observational instrument of field formats and category systems to analyze technical and tactical actions in the offense phase in soccer. The instrument collects information regarding the actions with the ball, moment of the play (start, development, and end), and contextual situation for the offensive team and for the goalkeeper. The instrument design, validation, and reliability calculation were done in four stages: (a) review of the literature, (b) design the first draft of the instrument, (c) experts’ qualitative and quantitative review of the instrument, and (d) observer training test (reliability calculation). The content validity was established by 12 experts (Ph.D. in sports science or soccer coach with at least of 10 years of coaching experience). The Delphi methodology was used. Experts did a quantitative (scale 0–10) and qualitative evaluation. Experts were asked about: (a) comprehension of the criteria, categorical cores, degree of openness, and their definitions, (b) pertinence of categorical cores and degree of openness, and (c) whether to include other categorical cores or degree of openness in the observation instrument. The lowest Aiken’s V index was 0.91 for the categorical core “numerical situation with opponent goalkeeper.” The inter- and intra-observer reliability presented good levels of agreement. The lowest Kappa index was 0.96 for the inter-reliability in the categorical core “defensive pressing lines” and was 0.98 for the intra-reliability in the categorical core “ball height (start of ball possession),” “distance of the defensive player,” “ball height (end of ball possession),” “numerical situation,” and “defensive pressing lines.” The coefficients of the generalizability analysis showed a high level of accuracy, validity and reliability of the instrument. The results show that the instrument allows to obtain objective, valid and reliable information about the offensive phase in soccer.

Differences in game statistics between winning and losing rugby teams in the Six Nations Tournament
(Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, ) Palao Andrés, José Manuel; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Villarejo García, Diego; Actividad Física y Deporte
The objective of the present study was to analyze the differences in rugby game statistics between winning and losing teams. The data from 58 games of round robin play from the Six Nations tournament from the 2003-2006 seasons were analyzed. The groups of variables studied were: number of points scored, way in which the points were scored; way teams obtained the ball and how the team used it; and technical and tactical aspects of the game. A univariate (t-test) and multivariate (discriminant) analysis of data was done. Winning teams had average values that were significantly higher in points scored, conversions, successful drops, mauls won, line breaks, possessions kicked, tackles completed, and turnovers won. Losing teams had significantly higher averages for the variables scrums lost and line-outs lost. The results showed that: a) in the phases of obtaining the ball and more specifically in scrummage and line-out, winning teams lose fewer balls than losing teams (winning teams have an efficacy of 90% in both actions); b) the winning team tends to play more with their feet when they obtain the ball, to utilize the maul as a way of attacking, and to break the defensive line more often than the losing team does; and c) On defence, winning teams recovered more balls and completed more tackles than losing teams, and the percentage of tackles completed by winning teams was 94%. The value presented could be used as a reference for practice and competition in peak performance teams

Effect of modifications in rules in competition on participation of male youth goalkeepers in soccer
(SAGE Publications, 2018-04-11) García Angulo, Antonio; Palao, José Manuel; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Giménez Egido, José María; García Angulo, Francisco Javier; Actividad Física y Deporte
The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of modifications in field size, number of players, and goal size on the goalkeeper’s actions in competition in male youth soccer (n¼4) (under-12). A quasi-experimental design was implemented to measure the effects of the changes in the number of players per team (8-a-side vs. 5-a-side), goal size (6 2m vs. 3 2 m), and field size (58 38m vs. 38 20 m) on the offensive and defensive technical and tactical actions of the goalkeeper. Four male under-12 goalkeepers (age¼11.33 0.6 years, average weekly training¼2.45 0.3 h, and years of experience¼4.8 0.9 years) were analyzed in three tournaments (8-a-side; 5-a-side; 8-a-side). The dependent variables were: defensive and offensive technical actions taken by the goalkeepers and the way their actions were carried out. The results show that in the 5-a-side soccer matches, goalkeepers carried out more defensive actions (8-a-side: 31.2 3.8; 5-a-side: 77.75 5.0; 8-a-side: 39.5 6.0; F2,6¼111,218, p¼.000, 2¼.974; ES .998) and offensive actions (8-a-side: 58.0 7.1; 5-a-side: 84.0 13.5; 8-a-side: 58.1 9.2; F2,6¼16,257, p¼.004, 2¼.844; ES .996) than in 8-a-side soccer matches. The reduction in field size, number of players, and goal size resulted in under-12 goalkeepers having more interaction and more variability in their actions. This information could help the different stakeholders to adapt or design the youth soccer competition rules in a way that allows goalkeepers to have more experiences.

------------------------

Multivariate analysis of performance indicators in elite women’s futsal: A principal component approach to understanding game dynamics.
(SAGE Publications, 2025-05-23) Villarejo García, Diego; Actividad Física y Deporte; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Ciencias del Deporte
The current study analysed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) specific to high-performing female futsal players using univariate and multivariate statistical approaches to better understand team dynamics in conjunction with individual performance. Data were collected from a sample of 10 female futsal players (mean age: 23.9 ± 3.4 years) over 25 official matches of the Spanish first division. Twenty KPIs were selected in collaboration with coaches and researchers to represent diverse offensive and defensive aspects of play. This study used observational methods and principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of data and determine key performance factors. Descriptive statistics and factor analysis were conducted, with Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO = 0.63) values and communalities evaluated for sampling adequacy. PCA shown two main components explaining 64.09% of the total variance. The first component, “Aggressiveness in Attack”, (47.02% variance), was strongly associated with offensive production, including high rates of goal plays, shots, goals, assists, and fouls received. The second component, “Forceful Defence” (17.07% variance), primarily reflected defensive effectiveness, characterized by high rates of successful disputes, ball recoveries, and defensive intensity indicators, along with fewer ball losses. Individual player profiles revealed distinct tactical roles, with some players showing strong tendencies toward either offensive or defensive abilities. In conclusion, the use of multivariate analyses provides valuable insights into the performance of women's futsal, offering practical implications for coaches and players seeking to improve strategies and enhance individual and team performance through data-informed training and tactical planning.

Shooting strategies and efectiveness after ofensive rebound and its impact on game result in Euroleague basketball teams
(Murcia: Servicio de publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2017) Suárez Cadenas, Ernesto; Courel Ibáñez, Javier
Ofensive rebound dominance has been widely shown as a key factor to success in basketball, since provide an extra attack. However, knowledge on how these second-options may results more efective is scarce. Tus, we aimed to discover the infuence of shooting after ofensive rebound on efectiveness, comparing diferences between winners and losers. Te sample consisted of 3010 shot attempts from Euroleague-Top-16. Variables pertaining to shooting efectiveness, shooting zone, and game result were registered through systematic observation. Statistical analyses included series of binomial logistic regression analyses. Results showed that shooting efectiveness increases by 67% when shooting after ofensive rebound (OR= 1.67; p< 0.01). Additionally, winning teams were more efective after ofensive rebound compared to losers (OR= 1.43; p= 0.03). Particularly, winners signifcantly scored more from the outside than defeated (OR= 3.40; p< 0.01), not fnding diferences in the inside (p= 0.62). In general, fndings point out important advantages of shooting after ofensive rebound, showing diferences between winners and losers tactics. Tus, it is suggested developing specifc tactical behaviours after ofensive rebound situations to increase scoring opportunities and winning chances.

The mental fatigue impaired beach volleyball attack technical-tactical performance: a crossover and randomized study
(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de publicaciones, 2024) Costa, Yago; Domingos Gomes, Jarbas; Lima-Junior, Dalton de; Lanzoni, Ivan; Batista, Giklmário
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of mental fatigue on the technical-tactical performance of beach volleyball players. Twelve males young beach volleyball players (16.1 ± 0.9 years old)were recruited to participate in this crossover and randomized study. The simulated match was performed under two conditions (control: 30 min without performing cognitive activities; mental fatigue: 30 min performing Stroop Task). The match is recorded and technical-tactical performance was calculated (coefficient of performance and/or efficiency of serve, serve reception, set, attack, block, and dig actions). The mental fatigue was “moderate” after Stroop Task, and statistically significant compared to the control condition [Mental fatigue: 62.5mm ± 8.8 Vs. Control: 6.4mm ± 4.1; p=.0001; ES: 0.9 (moderate effect)]. Moreover, attack coefficient of performance and efficiency was lower in mental fatigue condition that control condition (CP: Mental Fatigue= 1.5 ± 0.4 Vs. Control= 2.3 ± 0.2, p= .001; Eff: Mental Fatigue= 23.7 ± 7.0 Vs. Control= 36.0 ± 9.5; p=.004). In conclusion, mental fatigue impaired attack performance of beach volleyball players (one of the main key to win in this sport). Thus, is recommended avoid cognitive tasks or high cognitive effort before training and matches.
