- PublicationOpen AccessDifferential profile of PTSD in Spanish children 2 exposed to IPV and other types of maltreatment(MDPI, 2017) Castro Sáez, Maravillas; Alcántara López, María Vicenta; Martínez Pérez, Antonia María; Fernández Fernández, María Visitación; Sánchez Meca, Julio; López Soler, Concepción; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Psicología y LogopediaThis correlational cross-sectional study was designed to investigate whether the intimate partner violence (IPV) suffered by mothers (physical and psychological maltreatment), child eyewitness of psychological and physical maltreatment suffered by the mother, the neglect suffered by children, and the maltreatment (physical and psychological) directly suffered by children are statistically associated to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms exhibited by the child. In addition, the prevalence of child PTSD wasestimated, as well as the concordance between the PTSD symptoms assessed by the Child PTSD Symptom Scale (CPSS) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) criteria for child PTSD. The sample consisted of 152 Spanish children aged 8 to 17 and their mothers, who were recruited from Centers of Specialized Assistance for Women Victims of IPV. PTSD prevalence was 20.4%. The results of a canonical correlation analysis showed that the two types of maltreatment with the largest contribution to the canonical variable were physical maltreatment directly suffered by the child, and child eyewitness of physical maltreatment suffered by the mother. The potential developmental pathway of PTSD when both children and mothers suffer severe maltreatment needs to be examined, and this will contribute to the choice of the most effective type of specialized intervention.
- PublicationOpen AccessDomestic Violence (DV) in the Netherlands and Spain.

- PublicationRestrictedPerception of sex in the attitude-behavior relationship in school violence. A qualitative study(Elsevier, 2022-06-03) Pina, David; Marín Talón, María Catalina; Pagán Escribano, María; Cormos, Lucía Simina; Ruiz Hernández, José Antonio; Godoy Fernández, Carmen; Psiquiatría y Psicología SocialSchool violence is currently a focus of social alarm that generates special interest in research, given its significant impact on the personal, social, school and family environments of children and adolescents. With regard to the prevention and intervention of this social phenomenon, the study of attitudes associated with violent behavior in the school context has been described as an important variable. This study aims to explore attitudes towards school violence, associated behaviors and the influence that the perceived sex could have on this relationship. The sample studied consists of 96 participants from Spanish Elementary Education and Compulsory Secondary Education schools. Through focus groups and thematic analysis of the data, a qualitative study of attitudes associated with violent behavior due to sex is carried out. Seven groups of attitudes were identified: a) associated with gender stereotypes; b) towards Intimate partner violence; c) as a form of attraction; d) as a way to socialize; e) as a way to increase self-esteem; f) as a form of fun, and g) when it is perceived as legitimate. These results could serve as a basis for the creation of evaluation instruments, as well as for the design of prevention and psychological intervention plans based on attitude modification.
- PublicationEmbargoSexual function and intimate partner violence in middle- aged women: a community-based, dual-focus study in Spain(The Menopause Society, 2016-10-16) María M. Martínez- Madrid; González Cuello, Ana María; Arnau Sánchez, José; María M. Martínez Madrid; Enfermería; Ana González - Cuello; José Arnau-Sánchez; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de EnfermeríaObjective: To evaluate the association between sexual function and intimate partner violence (IPV) among sexually active, middle-aged women in Spain, examining each outcome in separate cross-sectional models. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 451 women (40- 64 y) randomly recruited from primary care settings in southeastern Spain. Participants completed the 6-item Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI-6), the Woman Abuse Screening Tool (WAST), and a general sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire. Factors associated with low sexual function and a positive IPV screen were analyzed using generalized linear models of the Poisson family to estimate adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR). Results: The mean age of participants was 50.09 ± 7.05 years. The prevalence of low sexual function (FSFI-6 score ≤ 19) was 33.7%, and the prevalence of a positive IPV screen (WAST score ≥ 14) was 16.6%. Low sexual function was higher among women with a positive IPV screen compared with those without (77.3% vs. 25.0%, P < 0.001). In the multivariate model, a positive IPV screen was related to a higher prevalence of low sexual function (aPR: 2.57; 95% CI: 2.04-3.25). Conversely, low sexual function was linked to a positive IPV screen (aPR: 4.67; 95% CI: 2.78-7.85). Spanish Roma ethnicity was also associated with IPV (aPR: 3.51; 95% CI: 2.14-5.74). Conclusions: Low sexual function and a positive IPV screen were statistically associated in this community-based sample of middle-aged women. A higher prevalence of IPV was observed among certain ethnic minorities. These associations persisted after adjustment for sociodemographic and clinical factors.
- PublicationRestrictedThe association between maternal exposure to intimate partner violence and emotional and behavioral problems in Spanish children and adolescents(Springer, 2016-09-15) López Soler, Concepción; Alcántara López, María Vicenta; Castro Sáez, Maravillas; Sánchez Meca, Julio; Fernández Fernández, María Visitación; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultad de Psicología y LogopediaThis correlational cross-sectional study was designed to investigate whether the intimate partner violence (IPV) suffered by mothers (physical and psychological maltreatment), the neglect suffered by children, and the maltreatment (physical and psychological) directly suffered by children are statistically associated with an increase in the probability of the child’s suffering psychopathological problems. The sample consisted of 189 Spanish children aged 6 to 17 and their mothers, recruited from Centers of Specialized Assistance for Women Victims of IPV. The results of a canonical correlation analysis showed that the most significant problems suffered by the children were both externalizing and internalizing ones. In girls, the maltreatment suffered by their mothers was directly related to a larger frequency of somatic complaints than in boys. In addition, physical maltreatment to the mother and emotional maltreatment suffered by the child exhibited a statistically significant relationship with aggressive behaviour, thought problems, rule-breaking behaviour, attention problems, and withdrawn-depressed.
