SUMMARY This research about Flamenco Dance is intended to analyse the kind of dance called Taranto, making a comparison between work setting and academic world, concluding with a methodological reflection based on the different ways it is taught at school in the subject Physical Education. The general purpose is: To find differences and similarities between Tarantos in a working environment and the ones performed in an academic context. The specific objectives are: To analyse the content of each part of Taranto Dance and in each decades within work setting and to find out the relationship with the academic context. To explain the choreographic evolution of Taranto Dance regarding the working environment and how the academic world followed that evolution. To prove that the use of “falseta” in the beginning of this dance is a symbol of identity as well as “Chaflan step” is in the zapateado. To reinforce that Taranto is a dramatic dance which lyrics are not only about the mine in spite of its many musical and choreographic ways of being finished: by tangos, by levante or using both of them. In order to carry out this research, an observational methodology has been used. For this purpose we designed an ad hoc sheet, AOBA-Taranto, where the traditional structure of this dance is shown (beginning, 1st letter, falseta, 2nd letter, escobilla and ending). In every part we analyse the contents performed. By using this sheet we have checked videos of Taranto in work setting, divided in different decades, and others performed in an academic context. The conclusions reached after the analysis and comparison of the data we had access to were the following: There are indeed similarities and differences between the dances perfomed in working environments and the ones performed in academic contexts, in terms of dance stages, professional decades, length, starting point, use of complements, different braceos, spins, zapateados, marcajes, hips movements and other movements made along the area considering the audience and dramatic expression. We scientifically prove that Taranto dance is a dramatic dance in general, as much in work settings as in academic world, although it can change in the final part. The lyrics of Taranto are not only about the mine but they always reflect painful aspects related with that or with different vital feelings of human beings and it makes conditional on the way the Taranto is performed. The Taranto dance is becoming more complex in terms of technical execution and choreography in a professional level. Besides we observe that the tendency is the same in academic level.

This doctoral thesis attempts to show that, as flamenco coplas are an important means of explaining and pointing out the universality of flamenco music, they communicate and get across common feelings between human beings, effectively becoming a didactic and therapeutic tool when applied (via a pilot field study) in special education music classes, taking as a kind of social laboratory the state education school "Pilar Soubrier" in Lorca, Murcia, Spain, in which is found a cross-section of different levels, ages, religions, cultures, genders, physical and psychological limitations and typologies (autism, psychotics, schizophrenics, psychopathic tendencies, various syndromes, serious deficiencies and so on). Prior to the field study, four sections were created in the study, with the aim of establishing an argumental framework for the understanding of the message behind flamenco coplas, ranging from the general (Flamenco itself) to the specific (positive outcomes in pupils). First of all. we consider Flamenco in all its aspects, taking into account that Flamenco singing and its coplas cannot be separated from the context which gave rise to it, and which has informed its development. Following on from this, we look into theories of human communication which are applicable to Flamenco, which help us in the end to understand the communicative, educational and therapeutic reach it possesses. Thirdly, we consider coplas in their literary context, treating in depth their rhythmic and expressive resources, to arrive at a knowledge of collections and repertoirs of flamenco lyrics which allow us to work in special education classes. The fourth part is where we analyse flamenco coplas in the strict sense, from the point of view of their expressivity, classifying them into diverse common themes in human experience (love, death, religion, poverty and money, sayings, honour, work, geography, satire, homour, fate, complying with the law, Saint's days, society, celebrations, and particular ways in which art manifests itself). This classification enables us to work with different educational content. Once the four previous parts have been studied, then we can take a step further and use this material to bring Flamenco to special education students, as a principal method and musical communication strategy for personal development, the normalisation of behaviour, and as a therapeutic technique for students. The pedagogic results obtained in special education following this pilot study have been very positive and greater than those expected, as in just three months, in the application of Flamenco in students between the ages of 3 and 22, it has demonstrated a special capacity for emotional communication, acting as a therapy and helping to achieve, as principal objectives, the modification and elimination of serious disruptive behaviour, the initiation of vocal communication, the synergy between Flamenco and painting as an educational method for the detection of emotions, and feelings in special needs students, the general improvement in health and social cognitive and motor skills, as well as the development of artistic appreciation, creativity and self-esteem. The results for this pilot study have been recorded in 97 short classroom videos which show the work and its fruits in situ, backed up by the results obtained by the centre management team, parents and professionals from diverse media (education, medicine, psychology, creative arts, musictherapy, poetry, music, speech therapy, physiotherapy, social work and so on). At the same time, this "surprising applied case" could serve as a pilot experience to open new pedagogic proposals in academic and scientific scope of education and Flamenco. Musical training of «Cante Flamenco». Around the figure of Silverio Franconetti (1830-1889) Guillermo Castro Buendía Objectives The specific objectives that we set ourselves in this work are, above all, those who purport to explain the musical nature of flamenco and its origins: 1. Determine what is the musical nature that defines Flamenco genre, to qualify what flamenco is and what it is not. 2. Define historically to where these musical nature that date to be able to refer to them as Flamenco or Pre-flamenco depending on the presence of these defining elements. 3. Analyze and explain the musical characteristics of all Flamenco styles, performing a classification thereof according to these characteristics. 4. Establish a coherent musical transcription on Flamenco music. 5. Study the coetaneous music to the birth of the flamenco genre that can interact with it, to compare it and to discover possible influences. 6. Establish a guideline when considering the antiquity of styles preserved by oral tradition or historical recordings. 7. Study of the stylistic features of the flamenco lyrics, origins, transmission and transformation, as well as their possible role in the transmission of folk songs melodies associated with them. 8. Determine the most important artistic figures in the birth and development of the flamenco genre, studying their contributions. Methodology The research work has consisted of the analysis of the different musical styles of flamenco and its study temporarily, using all possible documentary sources. The first point of departure has been the study of the musical nature of the flamenco songs that arise around the middle of the 19th century. For this purpose we have transcribed Flamenco songs preserved in recordings since about 1895, time in which are recorded the first cylinder of flamenco in Spain. We have studied the scores from the same period reflecting flamenco songs. At the same time we have studied parts instrumental and dance. We have also studied the collections of folk songs performed by folklorists who approached them in the 19th century and guitar Baroque and Renaissance music publications. Same thing we’ve done with the Repertoire of music for voice with accompaniment. The rest of studied documentation is mostly contemporary to the time of study. We had viewed newspapers of 19th-century, magazines, travel books, books of musicology, bibliographic dictionaries, theatrical scripts, etc. and various flamenco blogs of high quality on the Internet. Conclusions Flamenco music is formed from traditional songs that exist on Spain. The musical nature of the flamenco songs and their accompaniment coincides with traditional songs strongly rooted in the Spanish popular culture, such as: fandangos, jotas, seguidillas, romances and worksongs. These modalities will be subsequently becoming Flamenco styles throughout the 19th century, as they were: Cañas, Polos, Livianas, Serranas, Peteneras, Seguiriyas, Jaleos, Cantiñas, Soleares, songs without guitar and very end of the 19th century, Tangos and Bulerías. We find the most remote musical elements of flamenco in the music of the 16th century, in some Passacagliaz, Romanesques and Folias; and then in the 17TH in some Jacaras and Canaries. Guitar music of the 18th century and his idiomatic language, with the technique of strumming, will be the most important antecedent and the fundamental basis of the flamenco playing, that it will be defined during the 19th century. We have detected an important relationship between flamenco and music from America, process that dates back to the 16th century. The proximity of Africa and the slave trade from the 14th century is a factor to keep in mind regarding the transfer of rhythms, dances and music from Africa to Spain, something that came to happening time before their journey to America. These music in the colonies overseas suffered a transformation with the past of time and arrived again to the Peninsula by the main ports with the new world, such as Cádiz and Seville. It is in the mid-19th century when, clearly, we find descriptions of music, singing and dancing flamenco we know. The direct antecedents can be traced back to the last quarter of the 18th century, when are related the first data of parties and dances of candle with songs and dances with flamenco character, appearing the first names of songs and dances that will be part of a later repertoire. There are also the names of the first artists and family dynasties of singers and dancers. The role of Silverio Franconetti as one of the first businessmen in flamenco and encoder and creator of song styles seem decisive in the development of flamenco. His artistic personality left a mark of great importance in almost all modalities in his time: Cañas, Polos, Serranas, Seguiriyas and Soleares, transmitting his way of singing in his disciples and later singers.
ABSTRACT: By choosing from a choice of twenty different styles of tarantas, representative of this style of miner song, with this dissertation I want to share my artistic research on the process of adoption and addition to the set list of any cantaor. Besides, I would like to bring forward the interpretative decisions that are being adopted, using different methodology and tools characteristic of ethnography and autoethnography and complete everything with the recording of these. OBJECTIVES: Taking all this into consideration, the objectives considered are: 1. Firstly, in my capacity as a flamenco singer, the research proposes to select, study and incorporate to my set list twenty different styles of tarantas, shaping them in accordance with my artistic and creative nature, following careful exploration of the stylistic repertoire of the miner song preserved in the discography. 2. Secondly, here it is what comes first as an ethnographic and methodological duty in order to comply with the above-mentioned comprehensive turn from the general to the description of the particular: I have to draw up my proposals of what it would be the first theoretical approach to the working process of a flamenco singer. Furthermore, I also take into account his reactions at the moment of facing a whole repertoire. This will require to record all the artistic process carefully and verify the information with other sources in order to validate it. But, in any case, the result to be derived from this research will mean for me a source of enrichment and development as a flamenco singer. 3. Thirdly, I have to design a test and check on site sheet which serves as a registration form of the artistic experience in the process of preparation of a flamenco song / cante. METHODOLOGY: In this thesis I have used a wide variety of methodologies, ranging from the ethnographic to the historical-sociological and analytical-musical ones. I have selected the ethnographic method for being the one that gives me the opportunity to incorporate and understand my experience around a research task conceived from art. By using the inherent tools in this method, I can observe and take part in each and every session of rehearsal made with the (accompanying) guitarists. In brief, the ethnographic method, in its critical and permanent contrast between what the informer thinks (interview) and what the researcher determines he is doing (observation), allows me to participate deliberately in each of the stages of investigation through the notes and registers with which I pretend to assimilate it all as fully as possible. On the other hand, my work participates of the autoethnographic methodology in the sense that it satisfies the need to write from within the environment which is being studied and enables the use of methodologies specifically ethnographic, such as the observation and the multiple interviews. CONCLUSIONS: The main conclusions of this thesis are the following: • The study and recovery of an essential repertoire of the miner song, which opens up new avenues to carry out similar research with other repertoires. • The offer of approaching artistic behaviour, record it and offer the validation of a theory about the interpretative practice of a flamenco singer which never existed before. • To provide other flamenco singers and students who feel the need for further research on the study of their own artistic processes with a test and check on site sheet which enables them to address in the best possible way the work of adoption and addition of new styles to their repertoire.
