How should we historiographers evaluate such similarities beyond merely determining the continuities? And can we perhaps derive conclusions about this complex subject relevant to today's discussion from the opposing positions and intense discourse of the eighteenth century?
- PublicationOpen AccessTras las huellas de Mauricio Swadesh: en búsqueda de una lingüística "total"(2017-02-16) Swiggers, PierreThe notion of "antecedents" in the historiography of linguistics calls for a number of observations, concerning, e.g., the relevance and the justification of any reference to 'precursors'. An even more interesting question concerns the motivation underlying the identification of 'antecedents'. Basically, the reference to antecedents implies some kind of 'association', a type of 'solidarity' with ideas, techniques, projects formulated in the past. While this 'association' or 'solidarity' may seem a purely subjective affair, upon close inspection one detects an 'objective foundation', in the form of cognitive elements that appear in techniques, methods or models identified as methodological, or epistemological, antecedents. These objective cognitive elements gain in significance when they are tied up with views on the general nature of language, seen in its broader social and cultural context. An 'inspiring antecedent' in this respect is Morris (Mauricio) Swadesh, a student of Edward Sapir, who became one of the leading linguists in the second quarter of the 20th century. Although he is probably better (or best) known for his "technical", "theoretical", and "methodological" contributions and innovations -the phonemic principle; the morphophoneme as a solution for phonological alternations; glottochronology or lexicostatistics-, his most inspiring ideas can be found in two of his more general works (written in Spanish) on linguistics, La nueva filología and El lenguaje y la vida humana.

Because of their variety and complexity, Caramuel's schemes deserve a more prominent place in global studies on the subject.
- PublicationOpen AccessEl posesivo tónico precedido de artículo en la sierra de Francia (sur de Salamanca) y zonas próximas: el presunto islote hurdano.(2017-02-16) Francisco Sánchez, GonzaloThe lexical expression of possession in medieval Castilian romance has long been marked by the coexistence of the structure article + possessive, expressing semantic values, and the structure possessive without article, not expressing any affect. The structure article + possessive started gradually disappearing starting in the 15th century and has now totally disappeared from the written Castilian usage; however, this structure (with usually a possessive tonic) is still quite often used in the vernacular language of some rural districts, such as the Sierra de Francia (south of Salamanca). This article aims to describe, from two different corpora, the use and geographical reach of the medieval sequence and its variant tonic possessive + noun in the south of Salamanca and in northern Cáceres.
- PublicationOpen AccessUsos modales y epistémicos del verbo sentir(2017-02-16) Fernández Jaén, JorgeThe aim of this paper is to analyse following the theoretical tools established by cognitive linguistics the modal and epistemic uses of the verb sentir. We will demonstrate, from inductive observations based on a large corpus, that sentir has generated numerous uses diachronically in Spanish associated with the speaker subjectivity, with the expression of knowledge and with the verbalization of emotional processes. Thus, it will be proved that sentir is a very versatile verb from syntactic and semantic view and a highly productive lexical item in the discourse.

- PublicationOpen Access¿Puede ser el sufijo -oso un elemento relacional?(2017-02-16) Fábregas, AntonioIn this article we discuss whether the hypothesis that the suffix -oso is an abstract relational element -closer to adpositions than to adjectives- is plausible or not. This view would have the advantage that it would make possible an explanation of its semantic flexibility and the fact that it is used to derive a heterogeneous family of elements, but it also faces a number of apparent counterexamples that are discussed in detail in this work.
- PublicationOpen AccessConversar para ubicar y orientar: pragmática y uso de Cláusulas Relativas en niños(2017-02-16) Silva, María LuisaThis research analyzes the characteristics of discursive actions used by children (5 and 7 years-old) in conversations with an adult when they need to locate and guide to their conversational partner who does not know the physical space referred. The analysis focused on the pragmatic conditions of the task and the Relative Clauses (Rcs.) usage. The analysis allowed to recognize that, in these interactional dynamics, the plotting and use of spatial language are co-dependent phenomena, that there is interdependence between the activity of plotting and Rcs. usages and that there is a strong relationship between the frequency of Rcs. usages with the processes by which children configure and model the cognitive representations of the spaces described.

- PublicationOpen AccessElogio de la lengua nativa y planteamiento metalingüístico en las gramáticas misioneras: el ejemplo de Domingo de Santo Tomás(2017-02-16) Esparza Torres, Miguel AngelWhen comparing the birth and development of missionary linguistics with the slow process of the grammatization of the NeoLatin languages in Europe, we observed that the assessment of native languages (the praise of men though the praise of their language) in this missionary linguistics context immediately leads to the lexicographic and grammatization tasks much faster than in the case of Castilian and, in general, of the Neo-Latin languages in Europe. This article aims to confirm this assertion through Domingo de Santo Tomás' thought, author of the first Quechua language grammar. The praise of the native language by the grammarian also leaves its mark on the grammatization procedures, which are conditioned by the relationships established between the target language, the metalanguage and the reference languages.
- PublicationOpen AccessAnálisis de los recursos lingüísticos utilizados por los defensores del lector en pro de la confianza de los usuarios de la prensa(2017-02-16) Rubio Conesa, Triana MaríaThis study addresses two research questions: (1) Which language resources are applied by ombudsmen and how they adopt them? and (2) Is there any significant statistical variation in the use of those resources depending on the ombudsmen who participate or depending on favourable response to complaints? The compiled material was found in a sample of twelve columns (145 paragraphs) written by three El País' staff ombudsmen, which shows not only a non opinative genre, but also an informative one. In addition to this, the existence of significant statistical variations has not been determined when applying Chi-Square test depending on the intervening ombudsmen, but it has been found according to the sense of their responses.
- PublicationOpen AccessAnálisis de las fórmulas de tratamiento pronominales de segunda persona (vos-tú) en un pleito por brujería de 1602(2017-02-16) Boluda Rodríguez, María DoloresThis work intends to reinforce the fact that the voseo form was still in use during the first years of the 17th century, as an addressing formula used by the most disadvantaged social groups. This formula had slowly detached itself from its prestige feature and ended up fighting against informal addressing formulas to survive. To this end, several oral interventions extracted from a witchcraft trial in 1602 are analysed. These interventions reconstruct situations which include manifestations expressed in direct style.

- PublicationOpen AccessRelaciones semánticas entre los términos de aritmética y álgebra documentados en textos tecnocientíficos del Renacimiento(2017-02-16) Molina Sangüesa, ItziarThe vernacularization -and profuse diffusion- of the knowledge related to the exact sciences in the sixteenth century triggered two revolutionary facts: on the one hand, the democratization of calculus (promoted by the triumph of the algorists and positional decimal number system of Indo Arabic origin, compared to ineffective use of the abacus) and, on the other, the creation of a suitable terminology for the expression of arithmetic and algebraic concepts, among others. Thus, from a linguistic point of view, the aim of this paper is to high- light and study the semantic relations who contract some of the technical terms that make up this emerging terminology -specifically, the terms of arithmetic and algebra- to get a better knowledge of the history of mathematical specialized vocabulary at the beginning of his expression in Spanish.
