- PublicationOpen AccessUltrastructure of the Outer Retina in the Killifish, Aphanius sirhani (Cyprinodontidae, Teleostei)(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Mohammad Amin Al-Adhami; Janti Qar; Muneir AlKhdourThe ultrastructure of the outer retina in the endangered killifish, Aphanius sirhani was studied. The retina shows all eight layers and two membranes typical of vertebrates. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) consists of a single layer of closely packed, polygonal, low columnar cells. These cells have large, vesicular nuclei, well developed smooth endoplasmic reticulum, and well developed mitochondria. Phagosomes, lipid droplets and myeloid bodies are also evident. The cells bear numerous apical processes that, in light-adapted fish, interdigitate with the photoreceptor outer segments. The retina is of the duplex type, i.e. contains rods and cones. A variety of cones have been recorded in the present species. These include short, intermediate and long single cones, double and triangular, triple cones. Rod spherules each with a single synaptic ribbon and cone pedicles, each with several synaptic ribbons have been recorded in the outer plexiform layer.

- PublicationOpen AccessSomatic embryogenesis in Allium sativum L. (cv. Yamuna Safed 3): Improving embryo maturation and germination with PGRs and carbohydrates(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Abdul Nasim, Sekh; Abdul Mujib; Rashmi Kapoor; Samar Fatima; Junaid, Aslam; MahmooduzzafarCallus induction was obtained from basal part of the garlic clove on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium on which somatic embryos were formed. In Allium sativum L. cv. Yamuna Safed 3, somatic embryogeny has been categorized into three distinct stages: initiation and proliferation of embryo; maturation; and germination of embryo. The initiation of globular-stage embryo differentiation was observed on various BAP and 2,4-D concentrations but at 1.0 mg/l BAP and 0.25 mg/l 2,4-D maximum proliferation of embryos was noted. Best somatic embryo maturation was achieved on 0.5 mg/l GA3 amended medium; ABA at the same level was less effective. Embryo growth was maximum on 3% maltose while plantlet conversion was highest (65.15%) on 3% fructose added medium. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been presented to demonstrate the apparent morphology and structural details of embryo. Plantlets were successfully raised from in vitro developed embryos.
- PublicationOpen AccessGrowth, water status and nutrient accumulation of seedlings of Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae) in response to soil salinity(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Dayabhai Patel, Ashish; Sundarjibhai Panchal, Nilesh; Bhushan Pandey, Indu; Nath Pandey, AmarEffects of soil salinity on emergence, growth, water status, proline content and mineral accumulation of seedlings of Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae) were assessed. NaCl was added to the soil and salinity was maintained at 0.3, 3.9, 6.0, 7.9 and 10.0 dSm-1. Salinity caused reduction in water content and water potential of tissues, which resulted in internal water deficit to plants. Consequently, stem and root elongation, leaf expansion and dry matter accumulation in seedlings significantly decreased. Salinity impaired succulence of stems and tap roots. Proline content in tissues increased as salinity increased. Likewise K, Na and N content significantly increased in tissues as salinity increased, while P, Ca and Mg content in tissues significantly decreased. We discuss changes in tissues and whole-plant accumulation patterns of nutrients, as well as possible mechanisms for avoidance of sodium toxicity in this tree species in response to salinity.
- PublicationOpen AccessHaemosporidians in migratory blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla), a comparison between autumn and spring periods of passage(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Arizaga, Juan; Esparza, Xavier; Barba, EmilioThe spatio-temporal host-parasite relationships have a high interest to understand the coevolutionary processes between parasites and their hosts. Our main aim here was to analyse whether the prevalence and intensity of infection by haemoparasites in migrating blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla), at a stopover site in N Iberia, varied throughout and between migration periods. Moreover, we studied whether the parasitaemia had any effect on fuel load. Blood smears were studied from 132 individuals. Only Haemoproteus spp. and Plasmodium spp. were detected. Trypanosoma spp., microfilaria or Leucocytozoon spp. were absent. The prevalence was 35% and it did not differ throughout and between periods or between age classes, but between the sexes. Prevalence was higher among males (45.5% versus 22.7%), suggesting that males were more prone to be infected, which could be due to sex-associated immunologic variations. The mean intensity of infection was low (2.8 parasites/2000 erythrocytes). We did not find any effect of parasitaemia on fuel load.
- PublicationOpen AccessFirst record of dorsal and anal fin deformities in silver pomfrets, Pampus argenteus (Stromateidae, Actinopterygii)(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Al-Mamry, Juma M.; Jawad, Llaith A.; Al-Rasady, Issam H.; Al-Habsi, Sahoud H.The information on anal fin deformity is scanty and there is a paucity of knowledge regarding the causes behind such anomaly. Although, some information on the pterygiophore deformity in fish is available, nothing is known about the complete absence of those structures. In the present study, a description of the case of absence of the pterygiophores supporting the anal fin in silver pomfrets, Pampus argenteus (Euphrasen, 1788) collected from the Omani coasts of the Arabian Gulf is given.

- PublicationOpen AccessImplications of calcium nutrition on the response of Butea monosperma (Fabaceae) to Soil Salinit(Murcia : Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2010) Mukeshbhai Vaghela, Pratiksha; Tusharbhai Patel, Neha; Bhushan Pandey, Indu; Nath Pandey, AmarEffects of Ca2+ level on the response of germination and seedling growth of Butea monosperma (Lam.) Taub. (Fabaceae) to NaCl salinity in soil were investigated. Salinity significantly retarded the seed germination and seedling growth, but the injurious effects of NaCl on seed germination were ameliorated and seedling growth was restored with calcium supply at the critical level (1:0.50 Na/Ca ratio) to salinised soil. Calcium supply above the critical level further retarded the seed germination and seedling growth due to the increased soil salinity. Salt stress reduced N, P, K and Ca content in plant tissues, but these nutrients were restored by addition of Ca2+ at the critical level to saline soil. The opposite was true for Na+. The results are discussed in terms of the beneficial effects of calcium supply on the seedling growth of B. monosperma grown under saline conditions.
