- PublicationOpen AccessOrigen y características del sistema de aseguramiento de la calidad de la educación superior chileno(2014-08-01) Geoffroy Pitta, EstebanThis article presents the problem that motivated the creation of the national system of quality assurance in Chilean higher education, which came to life in the legislation 20.129. The identified problem refers to the deregulation of the higher education system produced in the 1990s, characterized by its massification as well as the processes of institutional autonomy and an uncontrolled expansion. This is followed by a discussion of the public policy, describing the institutions that carry out this system (the National Accreditation Commission, the National Council of Education, and the Information Service of Higher Education) and the processes that they execute (licensing, accreditation and public information).
- PublicationOpen AccessGénero y Calidad en Educación Superior(2014-08-01) Donoso-Vázquez, Trinidad; Montané, Alejandra; Pessoa de Carvalho, María EulinaThis paper develops an approach to the concepts of gender and quality of higher education in articulation with the concepts of social pertinence and social justice. Pertinence is conceived in relation to quality, which is understood as a social and public value as well as social commitment to the society and communities served by higher education institutions. The challenge presented considers that social justice, linked to the fundamental notions of equality of opportunities and human rights, can determine the social pertinence of higher education and hence its quality. The approach developed is synthetized in three theses: the processes of knowledge production cannot be disconnected from the gender cosmovision; without the inclusion of the gender perspective, the professional preparation within the disciplines is in risk of bias toward one of the poles of the masculine-feminine dichotomy; and the introduction of gender in higher education creates a model of socially committed and inclusive society.

- PublicationOpen AccessLos hábitos lectoescritores en los alumnos universitarios(2014-08-01) Guzmán-Simón, Fernando; García-Jiménez, EduardoThis paper analyzes and describes the writing and reading habits of university students inside and outside the classroom. To make this study possible, we have relied on information provided by the students, which has been collected through two questionnaires: one descriptive, applied to a sample of three hundred students in two degree programs at the University of Seville, and a second one of specific character, in three different versions. This questionnaire was completed by three subsamples based on the students' responses to the first one. The analysis of their responses allowed us to determine the existence of three representative profiles describing reading and writing habits of students: segmented writers/readers, private readers, and instrumental writers/readers. These profiles indicate that the students find difficulties in reaching original and independent thought capable of generating knowledge. The results not only show significant deficiencies in the process of academic literacy, but also raise questions about how this process is being carried in the field of higher education.
