Abstract
In this article we try to recollect the influence of the baroc art in western culture, and
in this case how it was the cause to create a textil e silk industry, to maintain the pomp and
opulence of a Court facing a strong economical crisis.
The investigation covers not only the reasons which produced this situation, but also
and especially, the number of technical, legal and teaching measures taken by the Crown
to maintain in an artificial way a demand not in relation with the Spanish culture and
tastes, but that was only an attempt to imitate French fashion.
There was a determination to sol ve the problems and godd will from the Crown, but the
lack of understanding between the French masters who taught the techniques and masters
of silk «Maior art», the laws from Madrid, without taking into account the opinion of the
Valencian masters and the fact ob being behind France and Genova maintained silk industry
in a permanent alert situation, which only the clear decision of the Crown maintain, or
better prolong its languishement.
There was a lack of cooperation, originally, and common effort from everybody,
neve1theless sorne goals were attained: the making up of a currículum, a connection between
theory and practice, the possibility for the student to exercise his creativity at work, and
besides professional honesty, knowledge and practica! hability were evaluated in
examinations.
