dc.description.abstract	El tema de la enfermedad mental reviste una importancia considerable desde las primeras obras de Flaubert. En primer lugar, en los Mémoires d’un fou, de inspiración autobiográfica, Flaubert pone de relieve el estatuto dual y ambivalente de la locura supuesta, cuestionando así el tópico romántico que considera la locura ‒ epítome del furor poeticus ‒ como un valor literario. No obstante, estimamos que lo que realmente subraya es la relación entre el individuo y la sociedad burguesa, cuyas convenciones su protagonista rehúsa compartir. Los efectos nefastos de este medio social se representan en su célebre novela Madame Bovary, donde el comportamiento de la protagonista manifiesta síntomas de histeria. Se sostiene que la sensibilidad y excitabilidad innatas de la heroína son menos determinantes en su decisión de poner fin a su vida mediante la ingestión de arsénico que la influencia de la comunidad provinciana. La misma interpretación puede aplicarse a Salammbô, quien sucumbe a la presión patriarcal no a causa de una fragilidad interior, sino debido a las exigencias desmesuradas que se le imponen.	es
dc.description.abstract	Abstract: The theme of mental illness plays an important role in Flaubert’s work. First, in his autobiographically inspired early work, Mémoires d’un fou, Flaubert highlights the dual and ambivalent status of supposed madness, thus questioning the Romantic commonplace of madness, the epitome of furor poeticus, as a positive literary value. However, we believe that he is in fact highlighting the relationship between the individual and bourgeois society, whose conventions his protagonist does not wish to share. The disastrous effects of this milieu are depicted in his famous novel Madame Bovary, whose behaviour shows symptoms of hysteria. It is argued that the heroine’s innate sensitivity and excitability are less decisive in her decision to take her own lifeby ingesting arsenic than the influence of the provincial community. The same applies to Salammbô, who succumbs to the pressure of the patriarchy not because of her inner fragility, but because of the high demands placed on her.	en
