This chapter focuses on the relationship between views and evaluations of democracy. The chapter develops and tests empirically a theoretical framework to understand the way the two attitudinal orientations connect to each other in individuals’ belief systems, and how the reciprocal connection is moderated by the quality of the institutional system. The analyses show that institutions work as an added boost for the effect of democratic views on evaluations, reinforcing, in particular, the positive effect of views on evaluations for the liberal democracy dimension and reducing the negative effect for direct democracy. When focusing on the effect of evaluations on views, institutions contribute to make dissatisfied democrats more aware of the democratic quality they enjoy, so that dissatisfied democrats in low-quality settings tend to entertain more demanding democratic views than satisfied democrats. Overall, the chapter contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between democratic views and evaluations.
