Abstract
Some recent examples of initiatives of libraries and librarians are described to explain how the professional role of librarians is changing in relation with the changing social context. This change would be consequence of the necessity to justify themselves through the social utility of its services, as well as to improve their image in society and to promote their libraries, in a context of the large range of informative, educative and cultural offers available.
