Description
Abstract
The aim of this paper will be to offer some insights for understanding the relationship between kinship and aristocratic power in medieval Spain. Based on the study of Leonese aristocracy in the High Middle Ages, it will be argued that within a cognatic kinship system, characterized by the fact that the political power and titles were non-hereditary and by an equal division of the material inheritance between brothers and sisters, the aristocratic kinship groups developed different strategies in order to ensured their long term social reproduction, enabling their continued exercise of political power, and building extensive and dynamic family wealths.
