Abstract
This article examines Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Kathleen Hepburn’s film The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open (2019) through the lens of materialist and feminist affect theories as they intersect with critical Indigeneity. It investigates how the film produces two parallel and conflicting reactions in the viewer, for whom “ugly feelings” (Ngai, 2007), such as failure, embarrassment, pity or shame, compete with an overwhelming and often frustrated need for empathy and compassion.
Este artículo examina la película de Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers y Kathleen Hepburn The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open (2019) a través de la lente de las teorías materialistas y feministas del afecto en su intersección con la crítica Indigeneity. Investiga cómo la película produce dos reacciones paralelas y contradictorias en el espectador, para quien los “feos sentimientos” (Ngai, 2007), como el fracaso, la vergüenza, la lástima o la vergüenza, compiten con una abrumadora y muchas veces frustrada necesidad de empatía y compasión.
