Tutors are in charge of the formation of the resident in Family Medicine. Thus, tutors must be good teachers who carry out supervisory, orientation, and supporting tasks during the learning period in a manner that that allows these residents to acquire the practical and theoretical knowledge required by the educational programs. Tutors may be qualified in teaching methodology and may possess experience in educative methodology, that is, they may have teaching competence. Tutors are obliged to initiate the educational program and put it into practice within the daily work schedule and in collaboration with the Family Medicine resident. For this, tutors are enjoined to manage certain strategies and methods, i.e., a methodology. This is because if the tutor has not learned how to perform a teaching activity, it will be very difficult for him/her to carry it out with the resident. In order to teach, the tutor must assume some of the educational models and employ one or two formative strategies, and one or more teaching methods. The main objective of this article was to review the formative strategies that can be handled by tutors to form their residents, to relate these strategies with the different teaching methods, and to propose an applicable and ordered scheme to expose these strategies and methods and to facilitate their utilization. This, in a fashion, would be akin to drawing a map of the roads tutors are required to travel, affording some advice on how to drive over these. . In this manner, we will construct a rational model in which tutors can locate what they do and what they should be doing in their teaching activities.
