Se presenta un conjunto monetal procedente del cast
illo berciano de Ponferrada
(León). Todas las monedas fueron encontradas dentro
del recinto amurallado de la localidad a
raíz de las diversas intervenciones arqueológicas q
ue con motivo de las obras de rehabilitación
allí se realizaron. Con un total de 25 monedas, pre
dominan las de cronología medieval del reino
de Castilla y León, existiendo también una pequeña
representación de moneda portuguesa y
navarra, además piezas de la Edad moderna; en conju
nto, abarcan un largo período que va desde
Sancho II de Portugal (1223-1248) a Felipe IV de Es
paña (1658). El estudio que se realiza
incide en los aspectos arqueológicos, relacionando
las monedas con las peculiaridades de cada
una de las zonas concretas del castillo donde se ha
llaron.
This article presents a hoard of coins found in th e Castle of Ponferrada (León), in an area named “El Bierzo”. They were discovered within the walls of the town in the archaeological excavation carried out during the re habilitation works on the castle. They are a total of 25 coins. The majority date from the Medie val Period of the Crown of Castile and León, some are from Portugal and Navarre and others from the Modern Age. The coins span a 400- year period from Sancho II of Portugal (1223-1248) to Philip IV of Spain (1658). The study focuses on archaeological aspects: the coins relate to the specific characteristics of the castle site where they were found.
