Description
Abstract
This text identifies and analyses three types of institutions that are different from the State. To do so, it reconstructs the framework of circumstances that contribute to the interest in non-state institutions (basically, the crisis of traditional institutions of representation and the neo-institutionalist turn in the social sciences and philosophy) and presents criteria for identifying what an institution is. From this framework, the phenomenon of cryptocurrencies (referable to the sphere of economy), neighbourhood watch patrols (sphere of police) and the phenomenon of counter-monuments (sphere of art) are studied. The article identifies and defends non-state institutions as evidence of social and political vitality, but also shows some of their limits and risks
