Abstract
It is a fact that today’s democracies are experiencing a crisis of representation as a result of the gradual discrediting into which the policies and actions of some politicians have fallen. This discrediting has led, on the one hand, to the emergence of populist movements whose discourse seeks to make a profit from citizen discontent and, on the other, to the search for complementary forms of representation of the interests of the citizenry. At the same time, it has raised a number of questions that need to be answered. The first relates to the role of the State, which, while continuing to be the protagonist of the public and power scene, is seriously involved in movements such as globalization and its multiple faces. The second question is the role that citizens play in the process of democratic regeneration and as the protagonist of a form of participatory democracy that returns politics to the noble performance of public management. This article is a reflection on the questions raised.
